Are you different? Do you have trouble at work?

Edited on Tue May-18-10 12:12 PM by leftyladyfrommo
I'm just curious about other people's stories. I am working for myself now - at 61 - and 30 years in the mortgage industry. I always had such a terrible time trying to work in business and it was simply because I was too different.

I was a democrat for one thing. And I actually dared to have ideas and opinions. That never went over very well even though I was always polite and tried to do the best job I could.

But I found it impossible to change who I was.

Never seemed to matter. Management was always looking for puppets and god knows there are plenty of them out there.

1. i have very strong opinions on many matters

that don't pertain to the work environment...and in that case, i keep them to myself. there is no reason for my coworkers or clients to know a thing about me that doesn't involve the work i do. if a coworker becomes a friend...then yeah...rock on with the opinions...but never a client.

You don't sound like a DUmmie.

2. My personal experience has been when you are independent, autonomous, and

not likely to conform (meaning you surrender your individuality), you are flagged if you work in an environment where obedience to a standard is demanded. Even being more intelligent than your coworkers and god forbid, your employer, puts a target on your back.

It sounds like you don't like doing your job. That puts a target on your back.

6. Yep.

Seems like at most places I've worked, it was pretty much all about teamwork, to the nth degree. Meaning if you worked faster, harder, or frankly, just had better ideas or were a bit brighter than others on your team, you were a target. I'm remaining as an independent contractor as long as I can.

13. Most corp. environments require acceptance of a certain amount of

subservience to be successful and play the game. I know exactly what you mean. If the rewards are great enough in terms of pay, the work is honest, and you can go along with it... I always checked my views at the door before going into work. If it all was really unacceptable I went on to another company.

Most businesses don't care about your political views as long as you do your work, and don't cause problems with others. Play nice.

WTF?  In nearly every role I've ever had, I've had to be independent & autonomous.  For that, I've been appreciated & well rewarded.

Am I different?  Uh, yeah.  Everyone in my dept, including my Managers and Director voted for Obama.  I do NOT get in political discussions at work.

I think she's talking over the heads of most of them, there is an implicit assumption in her post that the other DUmmies actually have some form of 'Work' besides posting unintentionally-funny shit on the internet.

From this post I've deduced this DUmbass is not in engineering, medicine, finance, science, mechanical maintenance, construction...

...come to think of it he's probably chronically unemployed between Wal-Mart, Denny's and travelling carnivals.

"Obedience to a standard" meaning, be to work on time, don't leave early, call if you're going to miss work, dress to your employers standards of appearance, etc. You know, all those outlandish demands from your Exploiting Capitalistic Pig Corporate Overlords.

independent: curses everyone out and doesn't take orders.

autonomous: kooky loner

nonconformist: holes in your body and head that is full of scrap metal that is not war related.

flagged: tattoes to the N th degree...I'm sure the company doesn't require those.

I've worked, been a consultant/contractor, or supplied equipment to almost a hundred companies and I can tell you that story is pure BS. Companies want to make money and that means shipping product. My best guess is that the DUmbass was doing the bare minimum, had ideas not related to increasing efficiency or the bottom line, and was a general pain in the ass that made his supervisor more work than not having it. I would also venture that the other employees got pissed about having to do said DUmbass's workload. Hence causing even more hassle for his manager as he had to keep the others motivated with the dead wood.

I have never seen a productive and innovative worker not move up the food chain.  I have seen lots of bitching from those that think they are special or being put upon.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Hmmmm?  Independent?  That means they'll make decisons on their own, the company just wants those decisions at work to benefit it.  DUmmie wante to surf youporn and buy hemp chair covers.  That doesn't help.

Autonomous?  Meaning work with little oversight?  Yeah, as long as the work gets done.  Companies love the sort that only needs a major goalset and a little guidance, they usually pay them well.  DUmmie wanted to surf the afforementioned.

Nonconformist?  Too vague to mean anything.  I'll guess the DUmmie didn't think the safety clothing should be required.

Flagged?  Look, if someone shows up in my company that takes charge sets and completes goals and doesn't need the man standing over their shoulder, yeah that person is flagged.  For advancement.  DUmmie means waist companiy assets and stirs problems in the work place.  That person is flagged too, as the first out the door.

I think what this DUmmy means is "Does not play well with others" and "Not a team player".  Of course, we have to "respect" them because we're all "different", but that usually doesn't go far when your employer expects you to do your job to their standards and not yours.

When your job is to make the donuts, the employer is not all that interested in your ideas about how they can become a player in the pizza crust market.

This primitives story is also played out on Skin's island everyday; too many wannabe chiefs and not enough indians.  They all believe themselves to be the smartest people in the room and, therefore, natural leaders.  But when you examine their lives, and when you examine real world results of those who have tried and tested their supposed "fixes" for the world's problems, they all end up to be failures.

I find this interesting because I've been in the mortgage industry for over 20 years now and there's plenty of autonomy when dealing with the customers.  Where there's not flexibility (or not suppose to be anyway) is when it comes to accurately reflecting the customers financial status, accurately reflecting the product lines, and logically determining whether there's an amicable fit.  Like most libs, this idiot probably let her "feelings" get in the way of what is considered stardard business practices, and company's want an employee who can think, not one who makes decisions based upon their feelings.  With a primitive, the company gets a double whammy because they're getting someone who can't think at all.
