How do you answer?
   
Over the years I have been asked--in widely varied settings and contexts--if I have been "saved."

It could be at the library, waiting for a bus, in line at the post office, or even simply while wishing "good afternoon" to a stranger.

The question arises again and again, and it always annoys me.


Not because the question is offensive in itself (though it is rather presumptuous), but rather because I know that any answer short of "yes I am, praise Jesus!" is going to result in a lecture and a none-too-subtle attempt to "bring me into the fold." If I could merely answer "no" and be done with it I wouldn't mind, but I know that an honest "no" will earn me a torrent of conversion rhetoric that lasts until the particular interaction has ended.

What I want to say is "**** no, and I think that you're kind of being a jerk about it," but I know that this won't do me any good anyway.


I would prefer not to be asked the question in the first place. Failing that, what answer can I give that will get me out of having to answer a dozen additional questions?

He probably shows up at church every first Sunday of every month for the free bread and wine and is getting annoyed when they ask him.

I've only been asked that once, and that was by my cousin, who is a Superchristian. She was out there in the trenches screaming and yelling when Operation Rescue first got started.

In 51 years, I've been asked 4 times....

Since 2005, I've answered "yes"....

I don't understand this guy's problem....   :mental:

What's the difference between asking him "Are you a Christian?" and "Are you (gay, liberal, democrat, a DUmmie, a moron, just f'n stoopid, etc.)?"

DUmmies get a wad in their panties over the smallest things....

I know I've been asked once...and there may have been a second time when I was a teen.  Of course, I'm only 50...and have lived in the Bible Belt all my life...but I suppose it could happen again someday complete with long lecture and all.   :rotf:

I suspect the poster is insecure in whatever beliefs he has and he is asking himself that question.

Why would that question make you feel uncomfortable?   It's simple enough to say "I'm not a Christian and I don't think I need to saved from anything, but thank you for your concern".  If that's what you truly believe than there's nothing to be upset of offended about.

If you have a feeling that maybe things aren't right in your life but you don't want to face those things, the question could make you feel uncomfortable... and I guess that's sort of the goal of the question.

Can't say I recall the last time I was asked that, though I have been, I know.  I take it in the spirit that the person asking it cares about me enough to broach the subject, and they're asking out of love or concern for my own best interests.  Only a total asshole would get upset over that.

I can't recall ever being asked that question. I swear, when someone asks a question like that I get the feeling that they haul themselves down to an Evangelical Revival just so they can post such nonsense.
