Concerns about an Oregon Department of Transportation employee who purchased several guns after being placed on leave prompted law enforcement across Southern Oregon to step in.

Negotiators and a SWAT team from Medford police safely took a man — whose name wasn’t released — into protective custody Monday morning in the 500 block of Effie Street, Medford police said in a news release.

He was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center for a mental-health evaluation.
The man recently had been placed on administrative leave from his job and was “very disgruntled,” the news release said.

ODOT Communications Director Patrick Cooney said there were administrative, personnel matters involved that limited what the department could discuss.
However, the state agency had reported concerns about the man to law enforcement agencies, who started monitoring him, officials said.

At first, I was like, WTF? Minority Report?  Then when I thought about it, it might be a good thing, knowing the guy was plaed on administrative leave just prior to buying the guns.  But at the same time, are they going to search someone's house if the already owned guns?

Yes indeed.

It should be a crime to buy a gun after losing a job right?

I've dealt with a couple of crazed-employee cases.  There is simply no way to handle them that meets both the safety concerns of their fellow workers and is fully compliant with their own civil rights.

Nothing untoward ends up happening in the vast majority of them, thank God, but the few exceptions are horror shows and the people vicitmized are understandably outraged that someone can be detectably nuts and an obvious menace even to a layman, and yet civil libertarians have made it virtually impossible to do anything pre-emptive to stop them.

How about the police knowing the situation (protect and defend) without violating anyones civil rights. Put a 24/7 watch on him and see what he does? I don't know its a tough one but I think until you break the law you should be a free man.

Of course you know my stance on being ready to defend yourself against some nut going ape with a gun. So you folks at the DOT get ready!

"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

There's no city police department in the USA that has the manpower to try to follow around everybody who may be dangerous and has a restraining order, let alone do it successfully.  For that matter, businesses almost never get restraining orders, they just tell the person not to re-enter the premises or they'll be arrested for trespassing.  A lot of cases don'e even involve people who were actually fired, they just got bad evals or 'Feel' termination is in the cards yet to be dealt.  Like I say, there just isn't a good way to handle the problem, somebody's rights get crumpled either way you go.

Not if most folks at the DOT are armed, informed and alert. Then its the law of the west and the world. Best man wins!

Heh, well, drawing on another part of my life entirely, what I was taught in tank gunnery is that whoever got the first shot off usually won.   :-)
