Capital flight and brain drain
« on: March 08, 2010, 06:41:37 PM »
Well, histore repeats, and this time we lose. I wrote over a year ago that the Obamanation policies as they were shaping up would cause the best and brightesr to go elsewhere with their money and their minds. LWN's, of course, didn't agree, or for that matter, understand what I was talking about.

Were I younger, I might  go home to Israel, d\espite the fact that I have only one Jewish ancestor....and that was before the Civil War......

If health care passes, I will be looking to buy property south of the border and start the process of gaining a second passport. Being an old fart, it's never too late to leave a sinking ship.

I was thinking of Honduras, specifically Roatan Islands, being an old SCUBA guy.

Dau. in law is a Honduran, making the way than for the typical GRINGO. But Barry has screwed up our international relationship and I have a health issue.....which may not matter if Obamacare gets passed. Rather die warm and happy than cold and pissed off.

We've pretty much settled on Panama, for a myriad of reasons........taxes, infrastructure, currency, and an excellent healthcare system being the foremost........

Jonn over at TAH said the same thing, but he's also got other ties there.  Also, I'm not sure I'll ever get that kind of money to retire there anyway.

Well....that's the beauty of Panama......you can retire and live like Bill Gates on an income of about $1,300 per month, complete with household staff.......this based on the fact that you have enough funds ($150,000 or so) to pay cash for your principal residence.......

We've been looking at St Croix...but I'm thinking we should check on Panama from what I've been reading here and other places.

Dunno, but if you qualify for their "retiree" permanent resident visa, you can fly anywhere the state-owned airline flies for peanuts......

Last time I looked, a round trip "pensioner" ticket on Panamanian Airways from Panama City to Chicago-OHare was about $141 (First Class!).......the airline also flies to Dallas/Ft. Worth, Atlanta, and LA.......don't know about Boston.

It'll be a few years, at least.  Even if I manage to pull up stakes at 62.

I love Belize.  I think it is a bit more unstable than Panama, but it sure is pretty.

I am retired and probably will buy something in the next 6 months. I am hard of hearing and learning and speaking Spanish might be a problem. Many ex pats in Panama live in Boquete which is away from the beach. Temp. there is a comfortable average of around 75. However, I want to live on the beach which jacks the price above 150 grand. The Dominican Republic have beach condos for less than half that amount. There are so many ex pats from the EU, US and Canada along the beaches, I would not necessarily have to learn much Spanish. D.R. beaches are also much prettier. The housing market has been devastated there so there are bargins galore.
