The Bible is hardly the only text that seeks to describe mankind being out of sorts with the universe in which he finds himself.

EDIT:
The eating of the Apple?
Many ancient cultures claim it was a pomegranate. The fruit is full of seeds and the seeds obviously convey imagery of things growing.
The Semitic word for seed is "zir" from which we draw our word zero and, wouldn't you know it the shape of the number looks like a seed or an egg. Tie this in with the Orphic egg, an egg with a serpent wrapped around it.
The nothingness from which life springs hearkens to the creation story where the universe is brought about from nothingness but within the egg lies man who will emerge a god.
An intriguing concept because we read:
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Two-sides of the same coin?
