Painting steel exterior doors....

We replaced our old wooden doors with insulated steel doors last summer. I want to paint them when the weather gets warmer but I'm not sure what will work best. They are supposedly pre-primered but I'm not convinced that it's adequate. I'd hate like heck to waste my time and paint to get a lousy result. Has anybody had experience with this process and what has worked if you have?

1. They are pre primed but since they've been hanging, you'll have to do meticulous cleaning before you paint.

2. They do need cleaning but...

They are both protected by storm doors and are under a porch roof. I'm hoping that will result in a little less elbow grease on my part.

3. Spray Paint

I spray paint those steel doors all the time. What you end up with is a factory finish look. You most likely would want to use a acrylic enamel exterior paint.I have refinished appliances with spray can appliance paint and got very good results. You can that. I use a professional spray paint compressor when I do doors.

With some of the new self leveling paint ,you can get a smooth finish with a brush. But a sprayer is best I think.

you can by a wagner sprayer for about $60.00 .Holds about one quart of paint, thats enough to do a door.Of course you refill the container when it's empty.

You can paint a room with those too,or even your house. I painted a house once with a wagner sprayer. I would call that a handy home owner tool for people that don't paint much. It beats the hell out of a roller

Anyway you asked, so I would say spray it.

4. I'd have to take the doors off to spray them, right?

I can't imagine trying to contain the spray otherwise.

5. Rustoleum Metal high gloss paint

I used a brush and didn't have and trouble with brush strokes. I did it with the door on the hinges.

6. That's how I've always done it, self leveling exterior enamel

Just don't do it on a hot day in full sun.

I've had to use spray paint on my steel crime door because of the grill work. I've put newspaper behind it and masked the side of the door with a sheet of paper as I've sprayed the adjacent area. A more precise person would have taped the newspaper down, but it's hard to get it to stick on stucco.

This is from the "Do It Yourself" forum, but these are cooking and baking primitives.

They haven't yet figured out one can use a cookie sheet for pizza, or a pizza pan for cookies, and so this doesn't surprise me at all.

If you live in a place where you *need* steel sheathed or solid plate doors - you can probably just wait a little bit and the local yoofs will come along and paint it for you / "express themselves" on it.

Now, for that would you use crime door paint, or would regular door paint work? And what is a DUmmy doing with a "crime door" anyway? Isn't that a little bit racist? Are they trying to exclude less fortunate people from their homes? Don't those doors send a negative message to their neighbors? DUmmies believe the evil folks are the rich ones, so why would they even need locks? No rich person is interested in a DUmmy's hovel.

Actually, almost all new entry doors are either steel or fiberglass. It's much easier to bting up the R value. Used to be only commercial doores were steel, until they figured out the typical wood door has an R value of just about nuttin'.

The Home Depott and Lowes, pretty much sell steel and fiberglass exclusively. A solid wood door nowadays cost upwards of $600 bucks for a 3'0. Steel, right around $140, fiberglass $220, for something that looks the same.

Building code, here in my county in TN....requires steel doors between house and attached garage. Most of the newer ones, come pre-primed and paint quite easily.

The black wrought iron "crime doors" were quite popular here back in the late 80's - 90's....in many places around here, they were/are a decorative status symbol...not necessarily because of crime. Give a bit of exterior pizazz to an otherwise boring brick ranch home.
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.

The first place I ever saw those wrought iron barred doors was Memphis in the late 70s. The were accompanied by bars over all the first floor windows. It gives a neighborhood a real nice down home look.

While there are a few areas around here with both the crime doors and the barred windows.....most places here, it just a decorative exterior door.

Lost my Wolf Hybrid Sierra last year. Ya didn't want to mess with her if you were un-invited. Now, I rely on the bark of my Bassets, Daisy and Lily. Their bark sounds like they're the size of a Rott or big Shepard! People are surprised when they see they're only a foot tall and a foot wide! LOL!

Dixie, my Lab is easy to get around. Long as you bring a tennis ball. Heh!

Their "Land Mines" are way more dangerous than they are, BTW.
