Winter Olympics Suckfest On NBC
« on: February 15, 2010, 08:10:28 PM »
I would like to know, on average, how many minutes of actual competition NBC shows during 60 minutes of airtime. My guess is between 5 and 10, except for when they have the really, really gay stuff like figure skating.

In a way I can understand. Most of the Olympic sports are so boring, if they actually showed the competition you would look forward to the commercials.

and they chose to send US-Canada hockey to one of the cable channels and air figure skating on NBC.

Hows that for stoopid decisions?

They've messed with the timing for everything else, they should be able to show both.  I watched a little cross-country skiing this afternoon, but they were introducing each each guy as he started, and apparently they had 90 people competing.  If they had followed some of the skiers it would have been much better than what they did show.

other than ski jumping (wouldn't it be cool if they could figure out a way to do it with weapons?), bobsled and luge, the winter games blow huge Llama chunks.

At least NBC knows their audience.

The tape delayed 2010 Vancouver Olympics are turning in great ratings numbers for NBC. The weekend Olympics ratings for NBC  hit 26.2 million viewers on Saturday night, making it the highest rated Winter Olympics since 1994. With the close proximity to the 2010 Winter Games it had been assumed that the ratings numbers for NBC  would be much improved this year, and it appears to be blowing the ratings from the 2006 Winter Olympics out of the water. It is also starting to appear that many viewers don't care that the Olympics are being taped and shown later to half of the country. Or it could be that NBC  has done a good job at hiding that fact from viewers.

Is 26 million a lot?

Since NBC has the Olympicsm ost other networks have reruns on, so now is a perfect time to clear some things of the DVR.

I'd enjoy the Winter Olympics more if the athletes were naked.

Not enough boobies in prime time teevee.

The electric Zambonis — part of Canada's attempt at a green Vancouver Olympics  — failed multiple times this evening, causing a massive delay in in the middle of the Men's 500-meter speedskating event. Hmm, wethinks it needs more internal combustion!

The Canadian-built electric ice resurfacers used at the Richmond Olympic Oval are supposed to help the environment but it cost the second half of the 500M speedskating pairs after one ice-resurfacing machine couldn't properly clean the ice. Then a second machine failed. Then they brought in a third and it, too, screwed up the course.

With speeds of up to 40 MPH reached on the ice, the rutted and uneven surface was considered too dangerous to skate on. It was eventually fixed but American Shani Davis, prepping himself for a gold medal run in the 1,000-meter, decided to withdraw.

I'm watching a lot of HGTV, DIY, Food Channel and Style.

Did CBS really need to go to reruns? :bird:

I've been watching, but the talking heads are getting to be too much.  The speed skating, the snowboard racing, and the moguls were fun to watch, but I really don't need the constant commentators doing fill time.  The sports were taped earlier in the day, so they should be able to play them with minimal interruptions, while they are at it, why don't they try starting them earlier.  8PM is awfully late for any kids that want to watch.

One of my HS English teachers was named Zamboni--yes, related to the inventor as well.

That being said, between the luge, the Opening Ceremony, the ice issues, the protesters, and lack of decent snow, this is rapidly becoming the EH-lympics.

Well considering the amount of gay friendly shows they have on their cable channels...by sending a manly sport like hockey to the cable channel and prominently featuring a gay friendly sport like Ice Skating...NBC is merely appealing to their target audience.

For once, NBC is actually making sense. Women and gay men are a consistent audience for figure skating. Almost no one in the U.S. watches ice hockey. Those stupid poker tournaments outdraw the Stanley Cup finals.
