Alas poor Syd, we barely knew him.

(and what we knew of him was pretty strange)

Yes, but he was a founding member...and maybe a source of talent for the band...before he went into his seclusion.  Strange indeed...they say there is a fine line between brilliance and insanity...he obviously crossed that line.

I love the story Gilmore told about a chubby bald guy walking into the studio when they were recording I believe Dark Side of The Moon{Could be wrong here} and just sitting there all night not saying a word. When they were finished he got up and walked out......It was Syd and none of them recognized him! :-)

Most of their songs are about Syd.

I believe one of the members of the band tried to contact him a few years before his death. Whoever it was said they found his residence, knocked on the door. Syd actually answered the door, but all he said was "Syd dosen't live here anymore".

Dude was whacked.

Yeah, he was a schizo...or now I think it's called Multiple Personality Disorder..

But if he still influenced the band, even after he left....he must have been quite the character.  I'm loading my cd deck with Floyd today and am listening to them this whole week.

While I have very eclectic taste in music...PF is at the top.

He was probably a bit nuts before his drug binge...but I'm sure the drugs put him over the top.

You notice all the music greats were hard core drug addicts...I guess the pressure and fame gets to ya...

Yes! I believe you're right...the drugs probably exacerbated his mental illness. Well alot of very talented creative people are tortured souls. Usually great art comes from alot of pain!

Syd was always weird, I think that the drugs just made him too weird for this planet.

Look at the early Pink Floyd hit Arnold Layne...those are STRANGE lyrics, even though I really like the song.
Also, the song "Bike".  That is weird stuff, even for the 60's.

A kind of demented genius, I guess.  I will say that his replacement by David Gilmore and the majority of writing duties being passed to Roger Waters certainly made Pink Floyd what it became.

I think if Syd would have stayed sane and in band, we would not have heard of Pink Floyd again.
