Being unemployed is the pits

In my case, no state unemployment benefits until May, if then. I started Social Security four years earlier than I had planned, so that we'd have something to live on.

Today, I got a letter saying that SS has overpaid me, so I won't get the next two monthly checks. I think that's because of the estimate I gave them of my expected earnings during 2009. As it turns out, those earnings didn't happen, so I'll appeal and, I hope, I'll get the money after all. But in the meantime, there won't be any money coming in. Sigh. I have no idea how long it will take to clear up the problem.

I'm sure there are DUers who are in even worse shape, and they have my full sympathy. It's just that I've been working so hard at being stoic and strong and hopeful, and then I got that letter today, and something broke inside. It's so damned hard, sometimes.

I believe your monthly checks should continue until that appeal is settled. Anyone else know?

That is the way it used to work.

4. I am too young to retire at nearly 55

No job prospects in sight. I am sure at one point I will have to work for myself. I don't see any other alternative.

I can see why the DUmmie is unemployed.  Take a look at his resume and you'll see that since 1967 he hasn't stayed at any job for more than 2 or 3 years.

Even if he seemed to be salt of the earth, I wouldn't touch a jobhopper like that with a ten-foot pole. But I don't  know programmers. Maybe it's normal to dump them every time they finish a project. This guy is a moonbat, though, so he probably needed to be fired.

Let me get this straight, this DUmmie worked for NASA, and now can't hold a job longer than 2 years? Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! Seems, perhaps the "herb" has affected his logical abilities and train of thought. Harder than hell to program if you're not stone cold sober.

Did you notice how often "consultant" is referenced? That usually means you know a guy that knows a guy that has a 'puter problem loading Win 3.0! Rarely is it an actual paying position, as the DUmmie will attest it was on commision basis. Hahahahahaha!!

Remember the post a few weeks ago where we were discussing college, experience and hiring?  This is exactly the kind of guy I would avoid.  Staffing companies will dump programmers when a client project is complete but for other companies it costs too much and they'll usually keep them as long as they can.  Sounds like the typical moonbat and got fired from each company.

Back in the dot com bubble it was common to jump between companies since that was an easy way to get a big raise.  Soon after that companies starting looking at that as a sign of a prospective employee with zero loyalty.

Some of that job-hopping kind of goes with the territory with programmers, I'm not sure I'd have a problem with that, given such a broad experience.  This guy has a masters in math and he simply can't find a job for this long?  He has all that experience and he's destitute?  I think he just likes funemployment.   

One thing that struck me about the resume was that he used the word "I" as much as Obama does in his speeches.  It becomes very irritating to read.

Uh, try again grasshopper.  Cashing out your 401k has no affect on your unemployment benefits.  I know this first hand.  More than likely the reason you aren't getting your state unemployment is because you have recieved it in the past, falsified your request, (claiming you didn't work, when you did), the state caught on to you, and instead of paying them, they are now penalizing you on this go-round.  One would think, with all of the unemployed peeps on that side of the pond, that they would figure this one out for the sham it is.

If you are unemployed, in Texas, you have to report in every week.  If you are doing any kind of temp or contracting job, you would report your wages, and then they dock off your earnings from your next check.  When the benefits run out, or you get another job, and the state realizes that they have overpaid, which they will eventually when an employer's taxes are filed, they try to collect the money. 

If you don't repay the money at that time, and then become unemployed again, that info is on your record, and they will postpone your benefits until the previous debt has been satisfied.  Since he had a date that they would start, that is my guess.  When the states are overloaded, it does take a while to get the benefit, but they don't give a date when they will start, they just start whenever they get around to it.
