I don't have the luxury of standing on my principles by not shopping at Walmart...
Some people live on a tight budget. With the husband hurt from his job, my going to school to try to finish my education and a little boy at home we have to support, money is so tight that we have to pick and choose what we buy from week to week. My mother can give the guys haircuts for free. I on the other hand have to wait on having the money for a haircut before I can get one. I trust my mother to give the men here haircuts. That's it.
Anyway, in order to have decent holidays we're having to do two things. Carefully save our money without using the only credit card we have and scour the ads to find the sales. One of the black friday ads leaked out. It was a Walmart ad that advertised Magnavox blu-ray players for $78. I passed it on to a few other online friends who I knew would be interested. One of them went off on me like I had committed an atrocity for posting it.
I know a lot of folks don't like Walmart and there are a lot of good reasons to not shop there, but we don't have the luxury of standing on principle. There are some things that are cheaper at Walmart. Something things you can get cheaper at other stores as well...if one is careful.
It's just upsetting to be treated like I committed a crime because we do shop at Walmart sometimes.
Because of so many primitive comments, only the PoP are quoted here.

2. I just moved, money is tight, and I have shopped at Walmart a few times, too. Don't let anyone make you feel diminished; they're not walking in your shoes.
And P.S., another rumor has leaked. Target is supposed to be having small appliances on sale the day after Thanksgiving for muy cheapo.

158. There is no union grocery store for at least 100 miles from here. Likewise a Target or K-Mart.
I won't buy meat at Walmart because of what they did to their butchers. But they have the freshest produce in town. Most groceries and toiletries are enough cheaper there to make it seem like throwing money away if you buy it somewhere else.
One does what one has to do.
(My father was a union organizer, so don't come down on me about this.)

237. Our Wal-Mart doesn't seem to be like that.
I haven't talked to anyone who works there who doesn't like his/her job.
My cousin worked there for five years (until retirement).

38. I confess to going there for a few things
tea, dog food, mostly and don't fault anybody who has to go to stay above water, but for me personally...$78 for more consumer garbage vs. homemade baked goodies is no contest. I know a lot of people don't have time to do things like that, but sometimes I think all the toys are what are really killing us...

I live in a teeny town and if I run out of underwear I have to go to WalMart, its as simple as that. There IS nothing else here. Not even another clothing store.
A lot of people live in a bubble..they think we all live in cities with lots of options. we dont.

135. I've shopped there hundreds of times.
Never felt bad about it, even once. Nor did I feel like I was so far above any other Wal-Mart shopper as to publish an internet site showing overweight, shabbily dressed people or ugly cars and expect everyone to think that no Democrats could be found who look like that.
And for that matter, I hate how hypocritical people here can be sometimes. DU'ers do business every single day at places that don't provide medical insurance or collective bargaining to their employees, with nary a second thought.
Wal-Mart though? Oooooh, boogyman!

153. Aldi's, Craig's list, eBay, thrift stores, garage sales, Freecycle
I've been unemployed for most of the past year and I get by by shopping at places that are MUCH cheaper than Walmart. Don't buy the hype. They do NOT have the lowest prices out there. I've purchased books and CD's that were "used, like new" on Amazon for 0.01. Yes, there's $4-5 shipping, but Walmart can't compete even then. I've seen a Sony Bravia 52" TV on Craig's list for "$675.00 or best offer" because someone lost their job and was losing their home, too. Freecycle? It's FREE. Can't get cheaper than that. A little shopping around will slash your costs in half-and you'll be helping other Americans who, in many cases, really need just about anything they can get right now.
