A woman in Illinois has died from a freak flash fire during surgery. Janice McCall suffered thermal burns at Heartland Regional Medical Center on September 2.The flash fire was immediately put out by the operating staff. The origins of the source of the fire is still unknown. Marion Fire Chief Jack Reed learned of the incident through news reports. He visited the hospital on Wednesday morning to investigate.McCall, 65, was transferred to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee where she died.Heartland has acknowledged that a patient died as a result of a flash fire but citing patient confidentiality laws refused to tell Fox News any other details.According to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare organizations there are between 100 to 200 fires each year in hospital operating rooms reports The Southern.KFVS12 reports that operation room flash fires are 100% preventable.
