"I want to reassure the American people that the full resources of the federal government are working to assist local authorities to save lives and to help the victims of these attacks. Make no mistake: The United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.

I've been in regular contact with the Vice President, the Secretary of Defense, the national security team and my Cabinet. We have taken all appropriate security precautions to protect the American people. Our military at home and around the world is on high alert status, and we have taken the necessary security precautions to continue the functions of your government.

We have been in touch with the leaders of Congress and with world leaders to assure them that we will do whatever is necessary to protect America and Americans.

I ask the American people to join me in saying a thanks for all the folks who have been fighting hard to rescue our fellow citizens and to join me in saying a prayer for the victims and their families.

The resolve of our great nation is being tested. But make no mistake: We will show the world that we will pass this test. God bless."

Talks to Cheney again en route to Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska and schedules a 4 p.m. meeting of his national security staff. Also talks to New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki. 7 p.m. - President Bush arrives at White House to prepare for address.

8:30 p.m. - President Bush speaks to nation from The Oval Office (text below).

"Good evening. Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes or in their offices: secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers, moms and dads, friends and neighbors.

Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.

The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger.

These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.

Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.

America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.

Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.

Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C., to help with local rescue efforts.

Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.

The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight and will be open for business tomorrow.

Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business as well.

The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts.

I've directed the full resources for our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.

I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.

America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world and we stand together to win the war against terrorism.

Tonight I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for you are with me."

This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time.

None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.

Thank you. Good night and God bless America."

8:35 p.m. - Bush attends national security meeting.

10:21 p.m. - Meeting has ended. Secret Service radio squawks with news that Bush has gone home to bed: "Trailblazer. Second floor of the residence."

Just reading the timeline brings tears to my eyes and the memories right back. Let us never, ever forget.

Thanks for that, Tx.

Right after I posted this last night I sat down with my son and showed him the videos on youtube of what happened.

He was only 4 at the time and had no clue what was going on.  I wanted him to know why I get kinda emotional around this time.

Normally he has a short attention span for what his dad wants him to watch.  He didn't take his eyes off my computer monitor for a solid 35 minutes last night.

If WE don’t tell remind and educate our kids about it...I don’t think anyone will.

I think after 9/11 I had a clearer understanding of why people of my parents generation to this day have such clear memories ow where they were and what they were doing when Kennedy was shot.  Or my grandparents generation that remember where they where when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

I've said this before but 9/11 was probably one of the defining moments in my life.  And it's a lot of the reason I am where I am today...and why I'm back wearing the uniform full time.  Not for any praise or thank you's...but because of this one heinous act.  I'm no different than the people who upon hearing about the attack on Pearl harbor...without being told...showed up at the recruiting stations to enlist.

For those reasons I will never let my kids forget why I'm doing what I'm doing and won't let them get brainwashed into thinking 9/11 is anything different or less than what it really was...or is today.

On 9-10 I was a Patriot.

On 9-11 I became a fanatic.

I was there visiting my Aunt Loretta who worked for Morgan Stanley on the 65th floor of the South Tower. I took the express elevator to go outside for a smoke. Then it happened.

Tuesday, September 11, 2001, began as any other September day for me had in the the last 16 years I had been working for *** Trucking Company.  A bit chilly and foggy as I headed north on the West Virginia Turnpike, exiting at #48 just north of Beckley, then heading north on US 19.

I heard the news of the first plane hitting the WTC as I was crossing the New River Gorge Bridge, a span over 850 feet above the expanse, in fog so thick I couldn't see past the second broken line in the road.  For the first time in the 16 years I had been crossing it, I became scared.

I continued north on US 19, then headed west on US 60 toward Anstead when I heard that the second and third planes had hit the WTC and the Pentagon.  By the time I had reached Chesapeake, WV, the towers had collapsed, airports were shut down, and Yeager Airport in Charleston had the Air National Guard on high alert because of the large number of chemical plants in the Kanawha Valley.

Later that day, I spent almost an hour at one of those plants, one that manufactured MIC (methyl isocyanate), the same chemical that had killed over 2000 people at a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India in 1984.  I couldn't leave because a small plane was circling the area, and guard units had been scrambled from Yeager Airport to intercept.  Turns out that the plane was having radio problems and was trying to land, didn't know what had happened.

All that, in addition to what was happening on a personal level in my life, made for a day that I have not forgotten, nor will I....

I was at work that morning, helping the residents get ready for work.  I had the TV on until about 7:45 a.m. Central when I turned it off for breakfast.  When I turned it on about 20 minutes later, the world had changed forever.  When I went home at 9 a.m., I just held my then infant son.  I thank God that President Bush was in office that day instead of Gore.

I have to wonder what would've become of MIHOP and LIHOP if Gore had been in office.  I can easily envision his mealy-mouthed, half-assed response.  Absolutely nothing like this:

Even more compelling is the fact that if Algore had carried his own state of TN, we wouldn't have had the FUBAR circus in FL, and Fat Al :loser: WOULD have been president....

Damned frightening, ain't it....
