When do you "Unrecommend"
I Unrecommend two or three posts a day. I do it for one of two reasons. The first is if a post is simply filled with falsehoods or misrepresentations. What with the storm of trolls that has rained down on us these past two weeks this is the most common reason I Unrecommend. The second reason, and this is one I rarely invoke, is a post that is simply irrelevant to any political discussion I can think of and that my Unrecommend is simply a warning to others not to waste their time.
What I don't use Unrecommend for is to voice my disagreement with the opinion voiced by the writer. If I disagree I'll write a response telling the writer and their readers what I think, but I won't Unrecommend the post unless it contains falsehood, as noted above.
How about you. Do you Unrecommend? When, why?
It's an enormous bonfire, so only the PoP are quoted here.

12. Same here..never
I assume that someone who takes the time to make a post, has something to say. If I disagree, I reply (or not), and then move to something else.
I do not set myself up as arbiter of "worthy post boss".
Just because everyone does not cater to MY likes, how is it MY responsibility to smack them down?
Also, where is the point of "r"-ing a thread and posting no replies? A dead-thread on page 5, with 30 "r's & 4 replies, is a lot less "powerful" than a <0 thread on page 1, with 100 replies
DU is like a buffet..I don't like beets, but I don't see it as my responsibility to stick a thumb's down post-it on the sneeze guard above the beets.. Other people may actually LIKE beets.

60. +1. I think that this is an act of cowardice and meanness and a way to bypass the DU rules forbidding going after someone.
Just this morning, there were a couple of posts that would not offend anyone, not controversial but got the "U" within few seconds. I think that there are DUers who just for being mean either go after specific posters, or, just to get their juice flowing "U" every single post.
Some, supposedly, want to prevent a post from getting to the Greatest page, and as I've posted before, I think that barely 0.1% gets there. So why not just ignore a post? Why the need to stick a knife at someone, anonymously?
As I've proposed before, I think that no U should be given for at least five minutes. If you really hate the post or the poster, come back after five minutes and U it.
Until then, I will continue to recommend every post with < than 0, even if it just brings it to 0. Since this program started, I've recommended in a few weeks more than I had in the five years that I have been here.

99. For that reason alone, perhaps it is time to at least suspend this "feature"

10. I think its funny as hell that this thread already has a Negative Recommend score
You can't even ask an honest question.

33. I don't see any reason why anyone would Recommend or Unrecommend this thread
you're right, it certainly not worthy of a Recommend, nor is it worthy of an Unrecommend by my criteria.
Let me tell you why I asked this question. I have seen a lot of posts, particularly in the last week and a half or so, that asked good questions, or pointed out an obscure source of information, or stated and supported an opinion that were immediately Unrecommended for no apparent reason. I put it down to the rain of trolls, but I could be wrong. So I thought I'd ask.
Why ask? For the same reason polls are posted - to gain some understanding of the audience. Here's an example. Yesterday I asked a question about gun usage. All I wanted to know was of the people who read here how many of them are actually familiar with firearms. As it turns out about three quarters of those who responded had some first hand knowledge of firearms; they had shot one within the last couple of years and in fact a good number of them had experience with them more recently. Now that is something to know on a web page where any anti gun post will generate lots of interest and support. Either a lot of people here shoot guns and don't like it (but keep shooting them anyway) or the people who don't shoot guns are quite vocal. See what I mean; it tells you something. That's just an example.

51. Wow! That many?
Now I understand how you use the feature. We're quite different. I didn't say it but I only Recommend two or three a day also. I think one has to give new insight or new information to find its way to the top. But I will say something on sort of a personal note. Its easy to get a post on the Greatest Page. I can guarantee you that I could write a post on any current subject and get it on the Greatest Page in less than 15 minutes after it was put up. Just follow a couple of rules and anyone can do it; keep it short, praise someone who is well liked, and offer the reader an opportunity to compare their opinion to the post. It'll do it every time.

32. I don't take these things seriously enough to unrecommend
I can't spend more than a couple hours a day here. I'd rather spend it reading a few more posts than participating in popularity contests.
However I'm not above alerting now and then.

38. Here's an example of a thread that seems to me to have been pointlessly unrec-ed.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...
The thread is directly about health care. It is intended to draw some comparison between our system and the system in other countries. There's no vitriol, no ranting, not even an opinion. Just questions.
Yet, before the first answer was posted, it was unrec-ed.
Can anyone suggest why?
