Reactions to Sarah Palin’s decision to resign the governorship of Alaska have been a reminder of her unmatched ability to elicit strong emotions from friend and foe alike. We know some of the reasons why. It’s her evangelical Christianity and her folksy manner. It’s her small-town roots and her “new feminism.”

But there is something more. A year ago, Palin gave birth to her youngest son, Trig, who has Down syndrome. Since then, mother and son have become objects of the left’s unrelenting scorn and the right’s unflinching fidelity.

An underexamined reason why Palin is loved and loathed so fiercely is her intimate association with two of our most divisive issues: disability and the right to life.

In her resignation statement, Palin suggested her decision was due in part to her family’s reaction to personal attacks against Trig. Those comments stoked the rage of the Palin-haters. At Talking Points Memo, an article sarcastically suggested that Palin resigned because “she wants to spread Down syndrome ... because Down syndrome is just too cute to be reserved for one in 800 births.”

A Paliban Daily article titled “Sarah Palin’s Retarded Platform: More Trigs!” interpreted Palin’s outspokenness on disability rights as a political ploy to win votes. Other articles contained subtle but unmistakable eugenic overtones.

Those reactions echoed the hateful response that met Palin when she introduced Trig on the campaign trail last fall. Nicholas Provenzo of the libertarian Center for the Advancement of Capitalism discussed being “troubled” by Trig’s existence because “it is crucial to reaffirm the morality of aborting a fetus diagnosed with Down syndrome.”

It it amazing to how much some people hate Sarah Palin.  Personally, I don't see why she gets people so riled up.  There are plenty of politicians that I don't like, but I don't think I've ever seen this sort of vitriol, except perhaps against George W. Bush.  The fact that people stoop so low as to actively attack her children on a regular basis is disgusting, especially those attacking her baby Trig.

Can we please discuss the Trig Palin issue and take the other issues to the Fight Club?? I DO believe that there is a thread regarding Sam Adams there. ;)

(on topic) And, to be quite honest, I don't think that Trig has divided America, but the MSM has. Sarah Palin breathed life into an all but dead campaign. The RINOs and the Progressives must fear Sarah because she is what I perceive to be an average American. At least she seems to espouse the same values as I hold and I believe, as many Americans hold.

The hate that the far left has spewed is beyond anything ever seen in recent politics. The comments of how Trig never should have been born because he has Down Syndrome just cut right to my heart. My daughter has Down Syndrome and has been a blessing. I have taught her how to live in the outside world, she has taught me how to live on the inside. I read the hateful article at HuffPo mentioned and helped spread it on twitter until it was pulled, what a dark ugly heart you must have to write such things.

Apparently the 'pro choice' crowd is really just pro their choice. How they can say they are not 'pro abortion' is beyond me.

It seems vitriol has become the standard, even in this thread.

Damn you.  I was trying to cherry pick all the decent comments and leave them here.
