Official: N. Korea Fires Four Short-Range Missiles
« on: July 02, 2009, 09:00:51 AM »

North Korea test-fired four short-range missiles within four hours on Thursday, Pentagon officials confirmed to FOX News.

While the surface-to-ship missiles, with a range of less than 62 miles, are not capable of reaching Japan, the test-fires are a move that aggravates the already high tensions following Pyongyang's recent nuclear test and U.N. sanctions imposed as punishment.

The missiles were fired from the eastern coastal city of Wonsan on Thursday afternoon and evening, a ministry official said on condition of anonymity citing department policy.

"One was fired at 5:20 p.m. and the other at 6:00 p.m. from Sinsang-ni" near the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, South Korean defense ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said. The third was reportedly fired around 7:50 p.m. and the fourth shortly after that.

North Korea had earlier issued a no-sail zone in waters off its east coast through July 10 for military drills. That designation has been viewed as a prelude to such missile tests.

Ground based anti-ship missiles with a range of 62 miles?  Those are going to be absolutely worthless against us.  We'll just sit 65 miles out and launch cruise missiles all day long.

I don't seem them coming after our shipping with that...think more of those short range missiles slamming right into the heart of Yongson garrison in Seoul or just into any random skyscraper in the same area.

Or hitting the bunkers at Camp Redcloud or the motor pools at Camp Casey.

IMHO that is what these missiles are designed for.

Well if they are Anti-Ship missiles, turning them on Seoul or something like that wouldn't be there primary purpose.  Oddly, GlobalSecurity has very little information on N. Korea's missile capabilities.  I guess most of it's classified.

I know I'm glad I'm not at Yongsan Garrison.  Did a one year tour there.

The ROKS are using Nike Ajax [1950s technology] SAMS as ground-to-ground artillery pieces.  They have them aimed, just like a rifle, at the southern entrance to caves on the north side of the DMZ.

Wouldn''t those be Nike Herculeas missiles like these?

I was a Custodial Agent (Security Guard ) over in Italy guarding the Nike Hercs there for a year and a half.

The Nike Ajax is an older missile that looks like this.

Did a year at Casey.  Wouldn't want to be that close to the North when the rounds started dropping.

Did a year at Casey.  Wouldn't want to be that close to the North when the rounds started dropping.

When I was stationed at Osan [79-80] I worked in intel, in the indications and warning center.  Part of the job was to sanitize raw intel and pass it along to the wing intel shop, which briefed ops and security police.  I sat in on one wing intel brief to a new group of security police.  One young airman on his first assignment went ashen in the face when they got to the part about how many ranger/commando personnel the north Koreans had and what their mission and capabilities were.  I heard him mutter that he wanted to go home.

I had an opportunity to read a wargaming scenario about what a north Korean attack would look like and the number of casualties which 2 ID would suffer at specific time lines - real scary stuff.

The north Koreans have enough tube artillery with the range to strike Seoul to devastate a sizeable portion of the the most southern suburb of Seoul.

I was stationed at Yongsan Garrison when a Chinese MIG-21 driver decided to defect to south Korea.  We were having a promotion party at Hannum Village and had a nice buz going when the air raid sirens started blaring.  Talk about sobering up quickly.

I suppose if they fired their longest ranged missiles that might give the US the chance to shoot them down and that would ruin the force of their implied threats.

The shorter ranged missiles are a way of keeping their cards closer to their vest.

I spent a year at Camp Liberty Bell, across the street from the JSA back in 1987. We knew we were done for if they Nonks came across. That's why we had twice a month road marches out the back gate and alerts to practice getting ready for that day when Dear Leaders dad decided to have a go at us.

Update: North Korea Fires 7 Missiles Off Eastern Coast

North Korea fired seven ballistic missiles off its eastern coast Saturday, South Korea said, a violation of U.N. resolutions and an apparent message of defiance to the United States on its Independence Day.

The launches, which came two days after North Korea fired four short-range cruise missiles, will likely further escalate tensions in the region as the U.S. tries to muster support for tough enforcement of the latest U.N. Security Council resolution imposed on the communist regime for its May nuclear test.

A senior State Department official told FOX News there is "no reason to doubt these reports we're all seeing."

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said three missiles were fired early Saturday, a fourth around noon and three more in the afternoon. The Defense Ministry said that the missiles were ballistic and are believed to have flown more than 250 miles.
