Fried bacon? FRIED BACON!!!!

Yeah, I know I shouldn't go nuts over the idea, but I'm watching this Food Network thing about favorite foods and first one of them raves about a fried hot dog with fried bacon chunks on it.

OK, fried dog and bacon bits. I loved the fried dogs at Rutt's Hut and the old Hange's and Johnnie's and some real bacon bits sounds good.

But then some guy comes on raving about Tempura Bacon. Only served as an appetizer at the place he gets it (he admits more than a piece or two and you'll drop dead on the spot) and guilt is assuaged by the bloated rashers arranged on a salad.

But holy Paula Dean on a spit-- I swear I got chest pains just looking at that thing.

1. Oh Come On....

You know you want it...

I admit...I'd try the tempura bacon. I grew up eating fried hot dogs in Jersey...(Call out for Rutts Hut!) so I can pass on those....but the bacon ...Mmmmmmmmmm. I wonder if they pre-cook it before they batter and fry it?

2. They'd have to unless they want warm, fatty, smoked salt pork in the middle of incredibly greasy tempura batter...if they could get the batter to stick long enough to be able to call it tempura.

They'd need to precook it and drain it thoroughly.

I'll stick to veg and the occasional piece of fish, thanks.

3. I haven't had a whole piece of bacon in well over a year

I do on occasion throw some of the bacon bits from the jar in the back of the fridge into a salad with "good" tomatoes and fat free blue cheese dressing. I like bacon alot but it's not on my must have list. I'd try the deep fried bacon in a heartbeat. I'm not so interested in the deep fried Twinkie but a deep fried frozen reese's cup could lead me astray as well.

I saw the episode of this show yesterday and I have been craving homemade donuts since then. I use to make a mean apple fritter when I was on the road to self destruction. Luckily I live close to Seattle so I can go to Lola's which I may have to do this weekend.

10. Lola's looks like a highway to self-destruction.

But that's the road the primitives are speeding down anyway, because of their rage, their anger, their Hate, their bitterness.

8. I should have taken notes...

I deep fried some ravioli the other day, and made some yummy French fries today, so I'm into frying this week, much to my doctor's dismay.

Bacon is on sale, of course.

(But I will not-- NOT, you hear-- ever deep fry a Twinkie or a candy bar.)

On edit--

Just saw the segment rerun-- Red Cat in NYC makes this and they don't precook the bacon.

They use applewood smoked bacon (YUM!) and a simple tempura batter of flour, club soda and egg white.

(this is too easy not to try)

13. Just a thought...

I watched a food show recently where there was deep frying. Pretty sure it was a Julia Child episode on PBS. She mentioned the oil needed to be HOT, HOT so the food cooked from the outside - and the food didn't absorb the oil.

Sounds right to me

Sorry - don't know the oil temp.

4. Better than bacon .......

Pancetta ..... less salty. Not smoked. It is the same cut, but rolled into a pinwheel before curing.

I know it isn't ..... but it seems somehow more healthy and less sinful.

But it isn't.

And so I avoid it.

Mostly.

after which a photograph of some really gross round bacon, which appears to be mostly fat; it's no wonder the sparkling husband primitive has a heart condition, dining on all that fat; or perhaps the sparkling husband primtive's wife feeds it to him on purpose, for her own ends

5. Meh I like it only for cooking

I love that fatty, smoky bacon eeee flavor.... We're only talking bacon here it's not like we're talking a full o fat yummie Italian Sausage. Probably a heck of a lot more fatty goodness in a sausage than in one measly little slice of bacon

Not only would I do the bacon. I'd do the sausage too!

11. Ya know, I thought the same way about German country hams...they've got to be more healthy since they are so delicious and so thinly sliced. All that white stuff tastes much too good to be bad for you.

Pancetta is marvelous stuff, but I need applewood or maple smoke in my bacon (preferably not from a lab retort, but that's getting really tough to find)

If you have to use the phrase "man's man" to advertise a food then yes it will give you a heart attack.

Bacon's good, bacon's great, bacon's delicious--but if one gets to having a good thing too much, it can kill.

Get a load of Warpy up there, being all sanctimonious with her vegetables and OCCASSIONAL fish, amidst a discussion of sinful things people enjoy.  What a wet blanket.  Shove it, Warpy.

Awh Hell, DUmmies, for Christ sakes, go on and eat the bacon. When you get the Obama Healthcare plan you want they're gonna let you die shortly after age 50. So eat, drink and be merry miserable.  ......forgot who I was talking to there for a moment.

If the DUmmys are vegetarians why are they all so massive?
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

I was wondering the same thing....

Also, how can people who are so obsessed with healthy eating....be so miserable all the time?

Eat some chocolate......have some ice cream.....piece of cake....a steak....might make one smile instead of always bitchin' about something!   :uhsure:
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

I saw that same episode.  It looked pretty damn tasty, even if they did stick it on top of a salad.
