Horse question of the day....
« on: June 16, 2009, 05:03:22 PM »
I live out in teh sticks, and quite a few of the people in the area keep horses.  I have ridden horses many times before, but know exactly squat about care and maintenance.

Saw one the other day on the way home that was a little unusual. The horse was wearing a "mask"...don't know the correct term, but it renders the horse blind...as in a blindfold.  I've seen them before and can't figure out why they're wearing them.  The horse in question was running a full gallop in a small fenced-in field.  How do he know where he is and not run into da fence?  Why the "mask"?

Maybe it was a mask to protect the horse's eyes from flies?

It's possible the horse had corneal injuries to the eye, or had surgery of some sort. They do mask a horse for this sometime if an enclosed barn is not available.Horse mask

Yup! The horse can see through the mesh.

That makes sense.  Couldn't figure out why the horse was running so fast, but couldn't see.

I can sleep now.   :-)

Sometimes they also have blinders so they don't get spooked so easily.

Yep it's a fly mask. I use them all the time when the flies get thick in late summer.
