Iran sends warships to Gulf of Aden - navy
« on: May 25, 2009, 01:26:40 PM »

"TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has sent six warships to international waters, including the Gulf of Aden, to show its ability to confront any foreign threats, its naval commander said on Monday.

Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, quoted by the ISNA news agency, made the announcement five days after Iran said it test-fired a surface-to-surface missile with a range of 2,000 km (1,200 miles), putting Israel and U.S. bases in the area within reach.

Iran said on May 14 it had sent two warships to the Gulf of Aden to protect oil tankers from the world's fifth-largest crude exporter against attacks by pirates but ISNA did not make clear whether they were among the six Sayyari talked about.

Iranian waters stretch along the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman. Iran has threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 40 percent of the world's traded oil is shipped, if it were attacked over its nuclear programme.

"Iran has dispatched six ... warships to international waters and the Gulf of Aden region in an historically unprecedented move by the Iranian Navy," Sayyari told a gathering of armed forces officials, IRNA reported."  Link

If they think those 6 boats will even come close to intimidating us, their smoking something pretty powerful.

Target practice. Having said that, Obama would have our Navy so hamstrung, well, you know.

Meh. They're partially protecting their investments and partially saber-rattling. I don't think they're under any illusions that they could block the Strait of Hormuz for more than a few hours. Is there any doubt that our Navy could deep-six their entire fleet? Hell, we've done it before.

They're doing nothing more than trying to impress their brothers in crime. Even this will do little to bring them into any status compared to the U.S. Navy!

You forget who is sitting in the Oval Office now.

Not only will those six warships intimidate us...it will force us to send an apology to Tehran for intruding on their territorial waters.

True, and they aren't presently doing anything that any other regional power couldn't do if it wanted.  The pirates are a threat to Iranian and Gulf State commerce as much as anyone else's, after all.  What they are doing with this does not amount to a provocation, and even if Obama had a clue what to do about them, this wouldn't be a trigger to do it.

One 688 gets in close, launches a few Tomahawks and Mk-48's, and the "Iranian Navy" is no more.

And with Tomahawks - and some OTH targeting assistance from a loitering aircraft - it doesn't even have to be all that close.

And when you consider the first four Ohio boats were reconfigured as SSGN's....

BTW--this is a boat I did a patrol on back in 1986...I think I'm getting a hardon...
