Let's just suppose they go out and buy their own damn cars like I have always had to do?

Okay, maybe some standards could be set.

Let's suppose they took their car to a mechanic and they couldn't fix it or it costed way more than the car was worth (like four thousand dollars, in which case you might as well get another car). Suppose the person opted to ditch the car or wait until they could get the money to fix theirs. They show this stuff from the mechanic's place to social services. They also have to provide a copy of their paycheck stub and bills. It could be determined then how long it would take for them to save up for a car or repairs. They have that long (maybe a grace period of a month or two) to get the money up while they use a car to help them get back on their feet.

A few years back, I was living in Raleigh when my car kept stopping in the road. Very unforgiveable in Raleigh. Mechanics kept thinking they had fixed it when it would keep stopping. Nobody could figure out the problem. It became obvious that I would have to get rid of the car, but I really didn't have money for another one. I couldn't get loans. Rentals cost as much as a decent down payment. Heck, I couldn't hardly get a ride anywhere, much less the one car place that I might have been able to get a car from. I had to move in with somebody else until I could get back on my feet. Suppose I didn't have family. BTW, having no car is a good way to lose weight.

on edit: I wouldn't want it being given or loaned to those on welfare without an incentive to get a job in a specified time period.

 :thatsright:

You speak of "standards"? And ask the government (at any level, matters not which) to uphold standards?

Or ask family and friends for help like I've for the last year without a car of my own.

The country is littered with cars you can buy with a single paycheck.  Just because it takes a little effort to keep one of them running doesn't mean you have to live without a vehicle.
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

It is deflection when you start comparing notes from one state to the next. It's immaterial, really. But it's good you came back to the point and put a little more meat on the bones.[/snip]

It was sarcasm, a resident of one liberal state throwing bombs at another (I thought you were a resident of MI).    MA is actually a Commonwealth whose  majority of residents are Catholics.   They are God fearing, taxpaying, pro-lifers who would vote against gay marriage if the legislature ever would allow it on the ballot (Romney tried and failed to do so).   They were raised with the belief that Democrats are for the middle class, and Republicans are for the wealthy.   It is not an uncommon occurence to see a pro-life bumber sticker next to a vote for ________ (fill in the blank Democrat) on cars here. They usually vote strict party line without regard at all as to who is running.   Worcester through Lee is infused with Independents, Moderate Democrats and Republicans. The only reason why Patrick won is because he picked Tim Murray as his Lt Gov who is wildly popular in Central MA.

The Herald is very much known for its whistle-blowing, for as long as I can remember.  They hammer Patrick weekly, if not daily sometimes.   The Globe on the other hand is going the way of the dinosaur very shortly.     The Worcester Telegram used to be a conservative leaning newspaper, but that all went to hell when the Times purchased it.   The Telegram will soon meet the same fate as the Globe.

Leominster isn't a sanctuary city.  That area through Fitchburg is just an area that is heavily populated with Hispanics (Puerto Ricans, South American -- not Mexicans).

No rumor about it. George R. was governor back in the Sixties. And when he tried to run for Prez, but realized he couldn't because he wasn't a natural-born citizen, well, he just sort of slipped off into oblivion -- which is a quality that's very reminiscent of the SE corner of that state. Its liberal moonbat, gotta-have-the-union mentality very much explains why I unassed that sucking chest wound when I did.

Ah, sarcasm. A technique I know all too well! And no, I fled Michigan for the last time back in '97. No warrant issued, AFAIK.

MA is actually a Commonwealth (snip)...

Yep, I know - just like Virginia and Pennsylvania. (I ain't no political junkie, but I remembered that from high school civics class.)

Really, now! Well, I declare!  :-)

Are you saying that the voters in your Commonwealth don't pay attention?

So Springfield and Worcester are running the state now? How does that stack up with the old money and the Kennedy regime in Boston?

This is where I hosed up. I was thinking the Globe the whole time, not the Herald. My bad!

I'm afraid that print newspapers are all headed for the recycling bin. They gotta get on line to maintain their readership.

Another interesting statistic. I don't remember a great many Hispanics in the region. Doya think they're comfortable in the snow?  :lmao:

Also part of the reason why I fled California.  And why, if this state goes much farther left, I might well leave here.

Most voters, whether Democrat or Republican, commonwealth, state, or your generic collective, don't pay attention.

They have more influence than you might think.  Actually, the folks who live in Marblehead and commute to their homes on the Cape run the state, you're right, and that won't change unless and until the old-school voters die out and the teat dries up--an unlikely event.  I've been to Catholic homes where they have a larger shrine to the Kennedys than to Jesus.  Go figure.  Then again, what does a dumbass Polock like me know, right?

Lanie, it sounds like you have always done what ever it takes to get to work or to get by. Alot of those folks do what ever it takes to get out of working...yet would be the first in line for a free car!

Where's my free car?

I reread the article.....they're giving away used cars, uh....wonder if any of them have been underwater....found with a body in them?

Sparky did a fine job replying so I won't -- save for my comments on Commonwealth wasn't for emphasis or schooling on "Commonwealth", bizarre you took it that way.   I was just making a comment on the high % of Catholic population in MA.

Boston may be the largest city in New England, but Worcester is the 2nd largest.   The statehouse would like to think that there isn't a world outside of 128, but there is, and without their support it matters not if Beacon Hill thinks that candidate is all that and a bag of chips, they won't win.

Tim Murray promised a whole lot to Central and Western MA by way of returning their tax money to them via increased local aide.    Never happened.  He is no longer the favored son.   Deval Patrick is a one term governor.

C'mon, 'lurker, you went out of your way to give me a civics lesson on the Commonwealth of Mass.! Go back and re-read what you wrote, dude! Jeezus!  :thatsright:

I'm not arguing with you on the Catholic percentages, though. Lotsa Italians still in the North End and lotsa Irish still in the area, not to mention all the Hispanics you were talking about.

I remember Mass. from the perspective of somebody who wasn't going to be there very long.

And wasn't.

Let's hope Patrick winds up a one-termer, as you're asserting. Any idiot who comes up with lame-ass shit like he did doesn't deserve to be around for 20 minutes much less four years.

You're right....but then it takes four or five paychecks for government fees in the form of taxes, license, registration, blah, blah.  Maybe instead of GIVING the poor a car, the gov't could waive all the exorbitant fees they take.  Then you really could buy a car with a paycheck.
