Obama, lawmakers agree on "cash-for-clunkers" bill
« on: May 05, 2009, 02:32:32 PM »
"WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama and Democratic lawmakers reached agreement on Tuesday on a legislative proposal designed to stimulate U.S. auto sales, which have fallen to near 30-year lows.
The one-year plan crafted by members of the U.S. House of Representatives would offer vouchers worth up to $4,500 for owners to replace their less fuel efficient vehicles for models that get better gas mileage.
The goal of the "cash for clunkers" legislation is to sell 1 million vehicles.
"By stimulating consumer demand for new vehicles, this proposal will directly benefit domestic autoworkers and automotive manufacturers, which have arguably been hardest hit by the current economic downturn," said Rep. John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat and staunch industry ally." Link

Another $4.5B going to help the UAW. I don't see this helping, it will just mean that car dealers won't have to offer as good of deals as they have been, and will offer less for trade ins. How many people may go buy some old clunker and keep their current car, while using the clunker to get the $4500 off of a second vehicle.

It worked in Germany... lots of Ladas and similar, cheap ex-communist makes are being built to meet demand.  Too bad none of the new cars are worth more than €15,000.  If this goes through, expect to see a lot of Hyundais, Daewoos, and Mahindras on the road.

The Sheeple will be thrilled. The new car smell is alive and well and permeates Washington, D.C.!

Thank GOD for Barack Obama.
