Somali pirates seem to have NO fear of the US navy. In their city they are safe from international retaliation. Dozens of ships are held in their ports until ransoms are paid (and they are).

The retards at DU have almost completely sided with the pirates.
Zero says nothing, does nothing.
and these ignorant muslim pirates will walk away with millions.

Its Carter II. The only difference is he is worshiped this time.

Here, take these...

This particular incident ended well (Of course this is the military he inherited - which of course won't be acknowledged, since it's not bad), but I have the strong feeling this is just the opening overture to what will be a very long opera.

Militarily the pirates are less than a threat, they're simply gunnery practice but tht would entail moving towards their hoome ports and actively shooting at them.

Do you really think Obama could/would do that?

Probably because it took this administration a little over 5 days to respond to 4 guys holding one man in a life boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean?

Individually they are trivial, but it's not one small gang of pirates, it is an institutionalized 'feature' of the Somali coastal culture, tied in with the warlords and the principal source of cash for the entire region.  Ending it completely and decisively is about as easy as stamping out the Afghan opium poppy crop (Unless you can resort to old-school methods and say "Somalia delendum est" afterward, which we can't get away with nowadays).

I'm curious how Obama will react to calls to arm the merchant ships. If they're allowed to defend themselves--and Cpt Phillips' crew was astounding int their bravery--it is the politically safer avenue for our Observer-in-Chief. It will be harder to implement his domestic gun control policies but the dems up for re-election next year will shut those down anyway. I can only imagine the reason why crews do not arm themselves already is because the ports they travel to have strict gun laws and getting agreements from so many individual governments is a nightmare. Add in civil liabilities and the issues compound by an order of magnitude.

The biggest problem with arming the merchant ships (and also the reason the whole criminal racket has prospered) is that the owners don't WANT them armed or resisting for fear of being sued if one of the crew gets killed, maimed or injured resisting.  There is some pretty contradictory information about this circulating, but apparently it is not so much outright illegal across the board at all, but instead depends on what ports of call the ship will make on the route, the law of its flagging country, and more than anything else on company policy.
