Guitar playing tips for a newbie
« on: March 13, 2009, 12:13:14 PM »
Does anyone have some tips for a newbie guitar player?  Since I'm all alone out here at the beach, I thought I might learn to play one.  I bought a beginner guitar at the local haji mart.

Best tip is to NOT learn on an electric guitar. Learn on an acoustic guitar. Practice on an acoustic guitar. It gets your fingers used to taking a beating and you'll ge calluses (sp?) quicker.

Pick ONE song that has a combination of a section with a main riff and a section with just chords, and practice the HELL out of it. Until you're tired of hearing it. Then pick another song and do the same thing.

Don't even ATTEMPT finger-picking for a while.

How did ya buy a guitar at the Haji mart? I usually get a 44 oz BLadder Buster soda there, smokes, and lottery tickets there.

Anyway, if you wanna learn, just learn the right way to hold the guitar and pick, get comfortable with holding it and used to how the strings feel, learn how to tune it, and practice strumming just say, an open E chord for a bit.

Here's a vid for beginners. Basic terminology of guitar parts, tuning, etc.
