What happened to clowns? Where did they go wrong?

I'm going to be 51 in May. When I was a kid, clowns were happy, silly people.
Kids loved clowns. Not anymore: Now they are all evil.

What happened along the way? I admit I stopped looking at clowns for a 30+ year period. Now they're in the movies, killing and doing all manner of generic evil stuff.
Was there one point where the Ringling bros and Barnum and Bailey Clown College went bad? When did the silly guys in grease paint turn to the dark side?

Was the turn all at once? or was it gradual?

What we need is some serious science to understand the fall, and save the institution of clowndom.

I think that John Wayne Gacy was the tipping point (although plainly clowns were evil before that, they were just evil in secret).

Back in the 60s though, he was actually kinda fun to watch.  Back then, he was just crooked, and hadn't crossed the line into full blown evil yet.
