WASHINGTON DC – Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters.

According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers.

Despite having a $32 million budget, PETA does not operate an adoption shelter. PETA employees make no discernible effort to find homes for the thousands of pets they kill every year. Last year, the Center for Consumer Freedom petitioned Virginia’s State Veterinarian to reclassify PETA as a slaughterhouse.

I tried to find the 2008 statistics from the state of Virginia.  They seem to have disappeared.  The 2004-2007 numbers are still availible.  In 2007, PETA euthanized 95% of the animals in their care that were not returned to their owners.

That makes me ill.  :puke: I need to dig through my completely unorganized favorites list, and try to find the exact number for other organizations' adoption rates, but I do remember reading that the ASPCA had a 75-77% ADOPTION rate.  Compare that to a 95% kill rate by PETA.  :banghead:

I seriously hope there are no further doubts by anyone on this site regarding PETA's so-called ethical treatment of animals.

What makes their "kill rate" even more horrendous, is that other shelters have a less than 40% kill rate, but those other shelters include local animal control units.  Now, you have to remember, that animal control is also responsible for rounding up strays, and also they get pets that have become dangerous or too difficult to handle for their owners.

Peta isn't about finding homes for pets.  There is a segment of PETA that believes that keeping pets at all is wrong, if I'm not mistaken.

And that segment, to me, means the whole organization, given that the founder is one of those "for me, but not for thee" type of liberals.  She has publicly admitted to wanting "total animal liberation" yet I'm pretty sure she has pets of her own. I won't give that group any positive credit whatsoever, due to that hypocrisy.

ASPCA, while liberal in itself, is a much better group.  Even better than them, are the locally-owned shelters.

I think we should go protest against killing animals in front of PETA. lol.

Sounds like they're nothing but a corrupt company.
Happy Upcoming July 4th. Our country is still one of the best in the world.
