I got a POW story, you cranky old bastard.
 Advertisements [?]An earlier thread reminded me of this story about some neighbors of mine, here in Tiburon.


My elderly neighbors died within a month of one another.

About a year ago.

The were both Dutch, and really old. I have lusted after their daughter, Tennika, since I first laid eyes on her.

Anyway, after they died, Tennika took "The Box" to a locksmith and had it opened. The Box had always been around, but never opened or discussed.

Inside was an account of her father's Dutch Navy experiences in the Pacific, including his capture after the Japanese sunk the ship he was on. He endured horrible, sadistic treatment at the hands of the Japanese and was kept in an underground prison in Nagasaki. One day, there was an earthquake.

The next day, almost all of the prison personnel were absent. The day after that, no one showed up.

After a few days, the prisoners decided to go for it.

When they got to street level, everything was gone. We had dropped the bomb.

Also, The Box held Tennika's mother's diary in which she recounted her adventures in the Dutch Resistance.

She was a shooter. She was a shooter, and she was twelve years old.

They never told their daughter, or anyone else for that matter.

I thought his other neighbor was Jenna Jameson who gave him "special treatment" when he regaled her of his brave actions in Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos/Watts/7-11 when he was with the Rangers/SEALS/Green Berets/Crest Kids/KISS Army.

Anyway, the Resistance was very much a localized leaderless resistance movement. Because in that type of situation there is no chance that the snake will lose its head.

She is a remarkable woman, even after all these years.

And get this, Cerridwen. Her husband-to-be was a sailor in the Dutch Navy who was taken prisoner and held in an underground prison in Hiroshima. One day they felt what they assumed was an earthquake. And the next day the guards didn't show up.

So they waited underground for a few days and still no guards.

They decided to break out and make their way top-side.

I often try to imagine what must have gone through their minds when they surfaced.

That would be a nice bit of lying for a mole to point out.

I knew that story sounded familiar.  Tommy loves to regale the Dummies with stories of all the characters he knows and how heroic and awesome they and their lives are.  Sounds like he is slipping down the slope of his alcoholism as he realizes how powerless and insignificant he truly is.  Maybe he will take the step and get some help soon.

I don't know about prisons that were completely "underground" - sounds more like something the NVA/VietCong would have been into, had they been more into keeping prisoners than they were, anyway - but I recall in my reading of "Pappy" Boyington's biography as a kid, that the Japanese kept him essentially in a sewage pit separate from the rest of the PoW camp/prison, over the year or so he was a POW.  He was not acknowledged to the Red Cross until after the surrender. 

This may well have been where TiTty got the idea for his latest lie.
