I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve....
Tomorrow my financial aid checks are supposed to come in, and they're looking pretty fat. After food and rent I'll have enough for quite a few CDs, a digital camera, a used wood alto recorder, a tattoo, a few new clothes, a bike, some concerts, and a sweet Halloween costume, and still have a few hundred left over to plop into savings.

Trouble is, it's not tomorrow yet. This is SOOO Christmas Eve.

So while everyone else is panicking over the bailout crisis, I'll be spending plenty to keep the economy afloat. If only more people were in the same boat right now....
Not to mention that part of this is going to be Pell grant money coming out of OUR taxes.  And in three months this moron will be bitching about how they are starving at college due to the ******* Bush economy...

At the age of 26 years, isn't the studious primitive a little bit too old to be living off the largesse of the taxpayers?

Eight years on the student-loan teat.

2. It won't be a pricey one
And I've thought it over quite a bit too.

Actually I wanted to get one done on my back sometime that shows a human hand and E.T. hand grasping each other amid a backdrop of galaxies and shooting stars. Around the image, a red circular emblem that says "Workers of the Universe Unite!"

This has got to be a mole. But, maybe it just is a DUmmy who doesn't see the irony in the theme of the tat and him subsisting off the free, gubmint checks.

Do you mean to tell me that for five years I've been paying for my own son to go to college when I could have gotten the taxpayers to foot the bill?

I've been watching the bonneted primitive for a while.

He strikes me as the "professional student" type, the one who stays in college because he's afraid to go out into the real world, and who lives on student grants and loans.

Remember, I do income taxes, and so I've seen a lot.

And I've seen a lot of late-20s, early-30s, finally emerging from the cocoon of college, only to find that while the grants were great, the grants weren't as big as the loans.

I think the bonneted primitive is going to have some regrets in a few years.

It may be a mole but a good one because, after all, isn't this reckless spending of money for useless/senseless shit what keeps them in financial trouble all their life?

naaawww, same as my daughter, your son would never have been "gifted" with taxpayer money, remember, FAFSA doesn't count mortgages and living expenses against how much they decide you could pay.  Besides, I'm willing to bet you or someone in your household has a job.

Do you really entertain the idea that he's going to even attempt to pay it off????????

Just asking.

I'm sure the little weasel will be thinking that way, but it is damned hard to avoid student loan debt, you can't get rid of it in bankruptcy and the collectors are pretty relentless.

I'm the same age as this primitive, and I didn't take out any loans(of course that resulted in no college). If I had I'd be in worse debt than I am now.

I wonder about this DUmmy's major. ChemE? Mathematics? Physics? Microbiology? Maybe not.
Or would it be Womyn's Studies? African-American Studies? Renaissance Art? Any guesses? Somehow, I lean toward something in liberal arts.

Any student who comes from a family that works, regardless their real financial situation, does not have a chance at this gravy train. As soon as this kid gets thrown out of college, he'll be instantly destitute, just like the home he came from. If he graduates, it will be with a degree that is no more valuable than a letter of expulsion.

So that's the problem.  My husband has a job and I own a small business.  Imagine that.  Two parents, both working, who actually planned ahead on how to pay for this college thingie my son found so necessary to take part in.   :rotf:

One more semester to go.   :yahoo:

What an idiot, after paying for essentials a sensible person would put the majority of this money aside for unexpected expenses and future necessities. That kind of thinking is understandable in an 18 year old away from home for the first time but if he is any older than that he is just plain stupid if he thinks the job market for a womyns studies major would sustain debt repayments on anything over $100 loan.

In Tennessee. I came down here to get warm, froze my arse off since I got here..
Just my luck... ;-P

You know, I've actually earned the money that I will get from the MGIB.  Lord help me though if the powers that be ever found out I spent my money on things like that.

I've never applied for Financial Aid, but isn't there a clause or something in there that specifies what the hell the money can and cannot be used on?

Well, no, depending on what kind of aid it is, the expenses will drive how much the debtor gets, but actually spending it on the right things is left up to the recipient.  There is kind of a Darwinian aspect to it, in the long run, so it's not necessarily all bad.

Sorry, Tanker, but in my experience you're wrong on this score.

It's a violation of the lending agreement (and might be illegal, I don't remember one way or the other) to use federal student loans on non-approved expenses - those being tuition and fees, room-and-board, and materials required for the courses you're in (textbooks, lab equipment, etc.).

Every private scholarship I've recieved had similar stipulations.

Now, does this stop the recipient from spending their award elsewhere?  Absolutely not - and I'll be the first to admit that I've used financial aid for non-authorized purposes - but it isn't the case that such spending is technically permitted.

Sorry, I meant there was nothing that could actually MAKE the idiot spend the money on his stated expenses which are the basis of the loan(s), since the money is disbursed directly to him, as opposed to the lender cutting checks to various legitimate creditors.  Lots of, perhaps most, institutions have additional safeguards set up to ensure they get their tuition paid up front on any term-by-term assistance, but obviously can't do that for block grants or loans that are meant to cover expenses beyond the current term.
