There Was A Shooting At My Gym

Recently there was an incident at the gym where I regularly work out. A 19 year old killed a 23 year old over an argument about a game of basketball. It happened on a night I didn't work out, but had I been there that night, it would have been around the time when I am usually just finishing up.

I am friends with the manager, so he told me the whole story. This gym has had problems with its basketball court for as long as I've been going there. The people who gather to play basketball there are generally a nuisance to those of us there to work out, mainly because they're loud (always yelling), numerous (they take up all the parking places and also drift out into the workout area and mill around on the machines you're trying to use), and are of the typically hot-headed late teens/early 20s age demographic. There are always fights and altercations, etc. Apparently what happened was these two got into an argument over the basketball game, started yapping at each other, then started making references to guns. The 19 year old pulled a gun OUT OF HIS POCKET and shot the 23 year old point blank (he later died at the hospital), and ran out the back door.

I'm SO glad that I live in a State where 19 year olds who can be driven to a murderous rage over a basketball game are able to easily get guns, and can tote them around concealed without any kind of training, licensing, insurance, etc. I'm also glad that I live in a culture where people feel the need to carry guns around everywhere they go, including frickin' GYMS. Thanks, DeWine and NRA!!!

My lifting partner and I have been discussing this issue, and I sarcastically said, "Well, if only there had been a 'good guy with a gun' there, then it wouldn't have happened." He replied (again, sarcastically), "Ideally, if everyone in the gym had had guns, then everyone could have pulled them out and started blasting indiscriminately." That's what led me to my ultimate conclusion. In this set of circumstances, there was no amount of "good guys with guns" that would have prevented this shooting. But do you know what would have? The 19 year old NOT HAVING A GUN TO BEGIN WITH. Maybe had there been ANY KIND of barrier between this 19 year old kid and the gun in his pocket that he eventually used to end the life of a 23 year old because he was mad, a person would still be alive today. Or maybe if he hadn't had the gun right there on him, and had to go someplace else to get it, he might have had time to reconsider the ramifications of his actions.

And thanks to gun culture, now TWO lives are over (arguably more, if you include the families whose lives have been forever changed). The 23 year old who is dead, and the 19 year old whose life is now over (if he ever breathes free air again, he'll be an old, old man). All because people in this country love guns, the NRA loves money, and Republicans love NRA money.

Did the 19-year old obtain the gun legally? Did he have a concealed carry permit? What laws would have prevented him from getting that gun?

In most places you need to be 21 to own a pistol..

The real problem is with the management of the gym that lets a situation like this happen..
If it’s a common occurrence you need to find a new gym

Reasons this :bouncy: is dubious:

Quote
... a nuisance to those of us there to work out, mainly because they're loud (always yelling) ...

IRL, gyms like 24 Hour (where I've been a member) have semi-isolated rooms for their basketball court(s) (at my gym it was a basement room). It keeps stray basketballs from rolling into other workout areas.

IRL, gyms have loud background music to motivate/propel workouts and drown out Jim Guy's grunts and the thuds and clangs from his weights workouts (some of which are proper safe form).

Quote
... numerous (they take up all the parking places ...) ...

Your city doesn't mandate parking lot size according to building capacity? ::)

So ... two half-court games with 3-4 players per team and a third group waiting on a court? Even at a car for every player, that claim is ::)-grade BS.

Quote
... drift out into the workout area and mill around on the machines you're trying to use ...

If only for the sake of safety, a decently laid out gym has wide aisles between rows of machines and even wider walkways between areas for different types of workouts.

Speaking of safety, is DU-member ChoppinBroccoli really claiming that basketball players are so clue-free about their own and others' safety as to wander among cardio and weights machines? ::)

Quote
... of the typically hot-headed late teens/early 20s age demographic. There are always fights and altercations, etc. ...

 ::) Stereotype much, DU-member ChoppinBroccoli?

::) What semi-decently run gym doesn't shutdown groups that allow fights and give members who actually fight the dis-membership heave-ho?

Quote
The 19 year old pulled a gun OUT OF HIS POCKET ...

::) Whether this :bouncy: is fiction or happened, DU-member ChoppinBroccoli doesn't know Ohio state gun laws regarding handguns, https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-2923.211 :

Quote
(B) No person under twenty-one years of age shall purchase or attempt to purchase a handgun, provided that this division does not apply to the purchase or attempted purchase of a handgun by a person eighteen years of age or older and under twenty-one years of age if either of the following apply:

(1. LEO

2. Military service
)

The 19YO, if he and the gun really exist, may have gotten his gun easily, but he did not do so legally.

::) So, the 19YO was playing basketball while he had a handgun in his pants or shorts pocket? ::)

Quote
... shot the 23 year old point blank ...

::) Other than cheesy detective novels and melodrama-queens, who talks that way? ::)

Quote
... ran out the back door.

Gym members have direct access to uncontrolled back/employee entrances? Not at gyms I've used. Gyms have a single entrance monitored/controlled to limit use to paying members.

To be sure, none of these are not-even-in-an-alternate-universe impossible, but each is implausible or worse individually, and each implausible claim compounds the next. IMO, this bouncy is fiction, and not very well composed fiction.

Matches many of the points given.  Still not putting any money on the poster actually going to this gym, definitely nothing on the conversation with the lifting partner actually happening.

And the shooter absolutely looks like a MAGA NRA supporter.   :whatever:

The shooting may be real, but the DU OP's tenuous connection is dubious. For example, the :bouncy: got this detail wrong:

Quote
A short argument occurred before Bush suddenly pulled a gun from his hoodie pocket and shot Cunningham multiple times, the court documents state.

This is the webpage for the gym, https://www.esportafitness.com/Pages/clubhome.aspx?clubid=1003&Hilliard-Ohio+GYM . Judging by the array of activities, I'm sure the facility has a semi-isolated room for basketball. IOW, the DU OP's complaint about shouting is bogus. Looking at Google Maps Satellite view for 1800 TANGLEWOOD PARK BLVD, I estimate 170-175 parking spaces in front of the gym, and more in front of the Dick's Sporting Goods store next to the gym. And then there's the Kohl's on the other side of the Dick's ... so DU OP's comment about basketball players taking up most of the parking is stupidly false.

All in all, if DU-member ChoppinBroccoli was :bouncy:-fying the shooting in that news story, ChoppinBroccoli[/color] got enough basic details about the facility so laughably wrong that (s)he has probably never been in the plaza where the gym is located (nor to the KFC, Tim Horton's, Chipotle, or Red Robin across the plaza access road from the gym and sporting goods store).

To any DU onlurkers:

enslaved1's news search and my Google Maps info illustrate why DU-folk need to keep their :bouncy: s fact-check-resistant. Search engines and Google Maps are not your friend if you make @#$% up.

My educated guess is, get this, the DUlusional DUmocrat DUmmy is lying.

If true, then it was a 13%er.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.
