I've been asking this same question here on DU for many years. And the answers are becoming ever clearer.

The majority of us are average, and somewhat "normal" human beings. Today's Republicans represent and attract a minority of people who do not hold most of the same values/morals that the rest of us do. They don't view the world, or reality, the same way that most of us do. Want some examples? Okay. Here are the beliefs of many (most?) of them:

O They are against abortion for any reason, including rape, incest, or the life or age of the mother.
WRONG take DUmmie...  Personally, I find abortion as BC abhorrent. It is a human life, and I find it weird that you're against the death penalty for criminals, but all too happy to murder a baby.  On the other hand, if you could make abortion an option up to say 5000 weeks... Maybe

O They are for the death penalty.
See Above; these are criminals that have *EARNED* their punishment

O They want no restrictions on gun ownership.
Not true... We want criminal control, rather than more laws that truly only impact the law abiding to begin with

O They are against any LGBTQ lifestyle, against gay marriage, and would make "alternate" lifestyles" a crime.
NO NO NO.... the whole LBGTQABCDEFHET argument used to be "what consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom...."  Yes, I agree with that. But the movement from the "bedroom" isn't just about "sex" its about everything else... if two gay men want to have sex, or 2 lesbian woman, or any combo in between, that is all their choice/decision.... why do kindergarteners need to have books read to them about it?

O They don't want people reading the "wrong" books. Book burning is fine with them.

O They want their children to believe the "correct" version of American history.
Hey, guess what... The US isn't perfect, doesn't have a spotless history. But we are the most powerful country in the world. We have freedoms here that so many dream of. You idiots all the time complain how unfair, racist, etc ... yet, people the world over want to come here and try to live the American Dream

O They want America to be a "Christian" nation by their definition of "Christian."
Not true.... we just are tired of you vilifying Christians

O They believe that violence is necessary to obtain their goals.

O They have no problem with labeling all "others" as "Thems."

Amazing how removing age-inappropriate material from school libraries is censorship, but removing opinions that dissent from the hive-mind on social media either "for the common good" or "perfectly ok cause it's a private company".  Also, book burnings by "conservatives" are few and far between, and to my knowledge and observations, consistently condemned by the vast majority of conservatives without quotation marks.  Personally, I read and listen to plenty of material I don't agree with, sometimes because it's entertaining and thought provoking (Transmetropolitan, comic book by warren ellis and George Carlin are both getting good amounts of rotation right now for both those reasons) or because I want to see if the opposing views have any actual, verifiable points (Lies My Teacher Told Me is slowly being worked on for this reason)
