At this point all I can say is: go and see it.

Over the past two years, more than 1,360 people have died from drug overdoses in San Francisco. That is more than double the number who have died from Covid.

But you don’t need more stats. You don’t need more numbers about how the tent encampments are exploding. Or about the amount of money that the city is paying for each person doing drugs on the sidewalks. You need to see it.

I’m serious. Everyone in San Francisco should make a trip downtown. Walk around. And do not avert your eyes to the people dying slowly on the streets.

San Francisco in decline. Many of the homelessness is from addiction.

A San Francisco man says the city practically pays him to be homeless as California residents continue to speak out in fear of the crime plaguing their communities.

"If you’re going to be homeless—it’s pretty f------ easy here," said the homeless man in a video posted to Twitter. In the clip, the man said he feels the police are like his "neighbors" and that he is remaining homeless entirely "by choice."

"I mean, if we’re going to be realistic, they pay you to be homeless here," the man added.

A homeless man in San Francisco chooses to be homeless as he is paid by the government. A choice he made.

I recently heard an interview with Michael Shellenberger (who considers himself a liberal) who wrote a book about the self inflicted decay in SF that is titled "San Fransicko:  Why Progressives Ruin Cities".  From the interview it sounds pretty interesting and well researched by the author

Across the Bay, in Alameda County, which includes Oakland and Berkeley, the situation is by some measures even worse — homelessness has nearly doubled in the last five years. “There’s a cruelty here that I don’t think I’ve seen,” the United Nations’ special rapporteur remarked on a visit in 2018, “and I’ve done outreach on every continent.”

This is why I refer to the city by the bay as San Francespool,  the world's largest open sewer. I also refuse to go there unless forced to by work.

The city maybe a cesspool, but it is a beacon of  shining light in the fight for inclusion and equity.

Being at the cutting edge of social justice is the important thing, so what if occasionally you have to scrape some shit off your shoes.

I only go to SF if I have a very good reason. I believe the most recent time I went there was accompanying my daughter who was going to a consulate to apply for a student visa. We caught BART in Milbrae, got off at the UN Plaza station, walked ~3/4 mile to the consulate (through the Tenderloin, blech), and then the same in reverse. There are several running events annually in SF that include scenic places like Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Crissy Field, but I won't do them unless someone else drives. Politics and bum crap aside, driving and parking in SF is nuts!

Rereading similarly cynical and prophetic Warren Ellis'  Transmetropolitan right now.  The City, with it's hundreds of new religious systems developing every hour, unchecked consumerism, perpetual drug use (even the AI is hooked on computer psychedelics), and constant search for new sexual perversions looks way too much like our current state of affairs.
