I was hanging out with some friends and one of them pulled out this stuff called salvia he'd bought on the boardwalk. Said he was told it was perfectly legal and everything.

So, he set it up in a hooka and took a hit. I didn't expect it to do anything. I always assumed these legal marjiana substitute type things didn't do anything more than smoking tobacco would. But within thirty seconds the effects hit him.

I'm not sure exactly what happened, but he left, in his mind I mean. His posture, movements and the sounds he made reminded me of someone with a severe mental disability. He was completely unresponsive to any of us or his surroundings during that time. His fiance called 911.

After about five minutes he started to come back. He would make eye contact when we spoke to him, and after a few more minutes he would talk back. The cops arrived ahead of the ambulance and put him in handcuffs because they said that sometimes people on salvia are violent. Then the paramedics came in and started asking him questions.

He didn't go to the hospital. He has no insurance so he couldn't afford it. After about thirty minutes he was almost completely normal again, anyway. He just said he felt like he'd smoked about fourty bong hits.

Once he was more or less back to normal, we asked him what he'd experienced. He said he'd gone to what he called "crazy peanut butter land" where he felt like he'd been trapped up to his chest in what looked and felt like peanut butter. That was the only way he could describe it.

I've been around a lot of people doing a lot of different drugs, but I've never seen anyone react to anything like my friend did last night. It scared the hell out of me.

So, does anyone know what this stuff is? Has anyone else ever smoked it?

Holy crap...now I feel like I'm in crazy peanut butter land.  This a dope bouncy for sure.  There are parts of this story that don't make sense and there is no way the police would let this guy go in the state he was in.

There was a bigs story on this stuff in the local news. Several kids were doing it and apparently there is a loophole in the law regarding its legality. Not sure what the current status is.

A bit I found online -

Salvia divinorum is a plant used for its psychoactive effects. Given the right dose, individual, set and setting, it produces a unique state of  'divine inebriation' which has been traditionally used by Mazatec healers. This inebriation is quite different from that of alcohol. Salvia divinorum is both similar to, and different from, other drugs that affect the brain and behavior. In many ways Salvia divinorum is a unique 'magical' herb. Salvia (and the salvinorin it contains) is very difficult to categorize pharmacologically. It does not fit well into any existing pharmacological class. Louis Lewin, the father of psychopharmacology called vision inducing drugs 'phantastica'. Let us dust off this venerable term and recycle it by calling Salvia divinorum a 'phantasticant'.

A few years ago, a kid in the school where I work committed suicide as a result of smoking salvia.

      This is a cousin to a bouncy story: they do something they think is cool, but they have to detach themselves from it when they tell the story on the off chance that there is something wrong with salvia. You know, like, George Bush owns all the salvia fields, or something like that.

      If you replace "my friend" with "I" where approriate, you get what actually happened.

      DU: the only place where you can take a break from being judgmental about Sarah Palin's parenting skills to tell a story about something you bought from some guy on the boardwalk so you can set it on fire an inhale it.   :whatever:

Dude!! Stay away! That stuff is worse than brown acid!

(For a really righteous pure high, try mainlining acetone. It's still legal, and cheap as dirt at Home Depot. You will die, which is what you are trying to do already.)
