6. There Are Protections We Can Take

Like requiring state/local matches for federal money. You'd be surprised how many red areas won't raise taxes or find some type of financial gimmick to get matching money. They'd rather do without than getting $90 for putting down $10. Not too bright.

Democratic voter apathy is more problematic than voter suppression in my opinion. Off year elections, primaries are poorly attended by Democrats. My state's legislative branch takes full advantage of that but putting ballot measures up during primaries (when independents don't show up). Republicans vote more consistently than Democrats so measures Republicans want get passed with 20% turnout. The last election, the largest city in my county had 10% turnout. Multiply that Democratic apathy across a state and you get a lot of Republicans winning on the state level in a state where there are more registered Democrats than Republicans.

That happened to Milwaukee and "the hop" streetcar line. They got $60+ million from the feds to build their streetcar line and are now on the hook for $4.5 million a year in operating costs. This is for a mode of transportation that only 450 people ride on daily. For free...there is no cost to ride it and less than 500 people a day do. Also, Milwaukee cannot just kill it because a condition of accepting the $$$ from the feds was the city needed to operate the streetcar line for at least 25 years.

So, $60 million in "free" money will cost Milwaukee about $100 million dollars before they can even think about shutting it down.

     I am also curious as to how this trick will be turned when they control the executive and legislative branches already? How odd. You'd think DU would be a wellspring of progressive ideas to funnel to Washington to make life better for all Americans, but instead they spin this sort of bullshit. These people are NEVER happy. Which, of course, makes me pretty happy sometimes.

I think that it's particularly egregious that the Republicans are creating a dictatorship by trying to make sure that elections are free and fair. Free and fair elections are always the first mark of a dictatorship...

Compare that with the valiant Democrat party who uphold democracy by making sure that all manner of non-citizens get to vote a few times.
