Revealed: neo-Confederate group includes military officers and politicians
Leaked data shows other high-profile members have overlapping membership in more explicitly racist or violent groups
Leaked membership data from the neo-Confederate Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) organization has revealed that the organization’s members include serving military officers, elected officials, public employees, and a national security expert whose CV boasts of “Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance”.
But alongside these members are others who participated in and committed acts of violence at the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and others who hold overlapping membership in violent neo-Confederate groups such as the League of the South (LOS).
Last Monday, the Georgia division of SCV commenced legal action against the majority-black city of Decatur with the aim of restoring a Confederate memorial obelisk which was removed in June 2020, and later replaced with a statue of the late congressman and civil rights activist, John Lewis.
Last year, in a widely criticized move, the University of North Carolina’s board of governors proposed creating a $2.5m charitable trust which would pay the state’s SCV organization to maintain a Confederate “Silent Sam” statue which had been removed from the campus.
That deal fell apart in recent weeks. But critics – including former members – alleged that the SCV commander for the state, Kevin Stone, associated with extremists and other “scary” individuals who had been recruited to the group.

That's like calling 'The Sons of the American Legion' a neo-fascist organization because they believe in American Exceptionalism...
SCV are those people who have ancestors who fought for the Confederacy.
Now- I don't... My ancestors all were Northerners, several of whom served in the Union Army. Another big 'OOOOOOO!!!!""" from the left which means nothing...

2. I'm shocked!
Shocked, I tell you!
That’s why I have a hard time with the blanket worship of our military and veterans.
Yes, I understand it’s probably a significant minority who are klan members/nazi lovers, but still.
I wish there was an easy way to weed these people out and prevent these types from serving in the first place.
CONFEDERATE VALUES ARE NOT AMERICAN VALUES! I’m looking at you Laura Ingraham.

4. April 9, 1865 (156 + years ago) It was supposed to have been all over.
Appomattox Court House.
America would have been better off if we would have shot or put in prison the leadership of the CSA.
America is still hurting from slavery's legacy aka "the electoral college."

6. Lincoln's Assassination
Unfortunately, Booth put an end to Lincoln's post civil war plan. Maybe things would have been different if he had survived the war and been able to stitch the country back together. But then again maybe it was too much for even him. Lincoln may not have been the most gifted politician but to me he seems to have demonstrated an ability to gauge possibilities and adapt to get them implemented. It's a shame he picked Johnson, an incapable politician and southern sympathizer as Vice President; pragmatic to have a southerner but not practical to actually have him take over.
What's interesting to me is that most of the upper leadership in the Confederate Army was mostly docile after the war ended. Very few of them actually supported continuing the cause after it became hopeless (Lee and Johnston surrendered their forces and instructed their men to go home).
To me it seemed there was a lot of opportunity and general good will to move forward along a different path post Civil War. It all seemed to fall apart after Lincoln's assassination with the final nail in Reconstruction imposed shortly after the 1876 election debacle. The fictional tale of history from that point forward (culminating in the Birth of a Nation movie) is still something we are still struggling with to this day.
Of course...Lincoln was murdered by a Democrat...
