Well, one thing about Mitt Romney that could be good for Republicans...

Could you ever accuse a Mormon of adultery?

“And again, as pertaining to the law of the priesthood—if any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse aanother, and the first give her consent, and if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery for they are given unto him; for he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else.”

I'm telling ya... multiple wives and my own planet after I die? Wow.. thats my kind of religion!

I am afraid Romney's Mormonism would be fatal to the ticket. Dems would base their campaign on polygamy and magical underwear, and the Utah teeny-breeders would surely find their way back into the news. As good a man as he is, Donny and Marie do not have enough votes.

The Mormons outlawed polygamy in the 1890's.

Any attempt at that would be viewed as the Dems attacking someones religion.  Mormons are everywhere, and people that know them may not agree with their beliefs, but they are genuinely good people.  The libs seem to believe that this is going to be a big problem for McCain in the South, and as a lifelong resident I'm just not seeing it.  The main problem with the McCain ticket is McCain and his history of stabbing conservatives in the back.  If he can overcome something like that, then the Mormon thing would be a breeze.  People vote for the top of the ticket.  Who's the Veep is pretty low on the prioriety list.

I'm not too keen on Romney, and yes, they would attack everything about his religion.  The Democratic Party is absolutely immune to hypocrisy, and the press will see they aren't called on it.

Unless you are also a Mormon, to the average person Mormonism appears to contain some doctrine that sounds about on a par with Heavens Gate.  The outlawing of polygamy may be long-established official doctrine but all sorts of 'Breakaway sects' have continued to practice it to the present day.

Romney certainly isn't going to appeal to Second Amendment types, the only thing he might do on the plus side is bring in a couple of traditionally-Blue New England states, which I regard as an extreme longshot.  The Pro-Life crowd will vote for a GOP mailsack over the Dem Duo, so Romney isn't bringing anything to that for the GOP that they don't already have.  If McCain carries any of the northeast, it would more likely be because of Bradley Effect rather than Mitt Love.

I largely believe they've won the marketing campaign of who is the 'good guy'. They've drilled it into people's heads that they are the party of the downtrodden and the altruistic. If you think about it, it doesn't work all that different from thinking of two people in your neighborhood--one you like and one you dislike and then having them both make the same error in judgement. The one who is perceived as 'liked' is going to get seen with some compassion and understanding compared to the person perceived as 'disliked' who may have made the same error in judgment under genuinely accidental conditions. Like it or not, the dems have made themselves the 'nice' neighbor who can get away with just about anything and still be seen as saint guy next door.
