The Truth About AT&T's $1000 Bonus For Workers

AT&T chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson announced on Wednesday that his company would be giving out $1,000 bonuses to some 200,000 employees as a result of the recent tax bill passage — but union officials representing those workers say the situation is far more complicated.

"This is a drop in the bucket compared to what was promised"

AT&T’s latest announcement comes on the heels of a December 14 agreement struck between the company and the Communications Workers of America. The union agreement, if signed by January 12, will afford 21,000 CWA union member employees a 10 percent raise and a $1,000 lump sum, in addition to the special $1,000 bonus announced this week.

However, a CWA spokesperson noted in an email to ThinkProgress that AT&T executives had agreed to the special bonus only after CWA argued that its employees should be given the “$4,000 wage increase promised by the Republican corporate tax cut."

How much cash does AT&T have stashed overseas, only now to be used to buy back share, which creates exactly zero jobs but, bonus, does make the rich even richer.

Couple of things here;

1.)  Notice how the DUmmies keep pushing the meme that this is only a bonus, yet every article I read also points out a 10% wage increase for 21k workers.  Interesting how they ignore the facts on this.

2.)  Hahahahahahaha  What good is a union?!  They stood up to the big bad AT&T and demanded they get the $4k wage increase and AT&T said "Ok, here's $1,000.00 bonus money, go away."  CWA took it.

OH well, DUmmies, are you tired of losing yet?  If not, just wait for November after all the people get raises and bonuses, and everyone sees a larger paycheck.  Tough shit if you live in a state that is living beyond its means and you can't hang that budget on the backs of the rest of the nation.  You need to take that up with your state government.

Yep, when the employees get a check for $1000, they're going to be really, really mad. Boy, are they gonna be mad. They'll be mad all the way to the bank. If I could get an extra $1000 every year over what I expected to get, I just couldn't live with myself. Don't know how these employees will even manage. But somehow, I believe they will.

I realize facts are irrelevant on DU, but whatever money AT&T had "stashed overseas" untouched by US taxes was also earned "overseas". Some of money may go into the bonuses, and therefore into the US economy. Much of the rest will also go into the US economy in the for of investments in PPE and in new jobs. IOW, all kinds of good stuff for the US economy that Obama was too damned blinded by his hatred for successful businesses to envision, let alone implement.
