Dan Rather blasts Trump for not treating Portland attack as a terrorist act

Dear President Trump,

Their names were Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Ricky John Best. One was a recent college graduate. The other was an army veteran and father of four. I wish we would hear you say these names, or even just tweet them. They were brave Americans who died at the hands of someone who, when all the facts are collected, we may have every right to call a terrorist. A third brave man, Micah David-Cole Fletcher, was wounded in the knife attack.

This story may not neatly fit into a narrative you pushed on the campaign trail and that has followed you into the White House. They were not killed by an undocumented immigrant or a "radical Islamic terrorist." They were killed in an act of civic love, facing down a man allegedly spewing hate speech directed at two teenage girls, one of whom was wearing a hijab. That man seems to have a public record of "extremist ideology" - a term issued by the Portland Police Bureau.
This "extremism" may be of a different type than gets most of your attention, or even the attention in the press. But that doesn't make it any less serious, or deadly. And this kind of "extremism" is on the rise, especially in the wake of your political ascendency. Most people who study these sorts of things do not think that is a coincidence. I do not blame you directly for this incident. Nor do I think other people should. But what a President says, who he has around him, and the tone he sets can set the tone for the nation at large.

Perhaps Portland, Oregon is off your radar. It is, after all, a rather liberal place. It's even a "sanctuary city." But it is still an American city. And you are its President. Two Americans have died leaving family and friends behind. They are mourned by millions more who are also deeply worried about what might come next.

I hope you can find it worthy of your time to take notice.

7. This reflects my reasoning

when I used the words "terrorist" and "terrorism" in the headlines of a couple of posts on the subject. I self-deleted those posts after getting scolded by a DU regular for misusing the term. I do think that the difference between what is considered a hate crime versus an act of terrorism is not entirely clear and should be debated in light of a growing concern about politically motivated domestic acts of violence. Here I am using a broad definition of "political" as described in this article: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics

The perpetrator of the crimes committed in Portland on Friday may not have gotten on the MAX train with an intent to do physical harm that was politically motivated, but he was armed and intentionally acting belligerently towards two women using public transportation because they appeared to be Muslim. Would he have done physical harm to them had he not been stopped? We probably can't know. But if he had been a Muslim and acting with escalating menace towards two non-Muslims how would it have been described in the press? Did the martyred heroes of the situation prevent a hate crime or a potential act of terrorism?

the guy was a crazy ****ing lunatic who Portland soft-handed over the years. The TWO federal gun charges (which they let him off with time served) would have had him beind bars for 20 years...

BUT NO.... he's not a threat until he kills someone.

Ummmmmm ... Trump just spent a very busy week or so in EuroLand and time in the ME before that. He landed in DC last night, after a multi-hour flight. So Dan Blather and DU-Morons can bleep-off.

Right now, with what is public, the Portland stabber looks more like a hate-driven paranoiac-fruitcake than an actual terrorist. Without knowing anything specific, I would be totally unsurprised to learn that he has a psychiatric record longer than my arm.

Maybe it's so grossly obvious that this post is superfluous, but Blather and DU-morons believe they finally have a reich-wing Islamophobe who Trump hasn't called a terrorist. And think that proves Trump has a soft spot for such people.

In reality, Trump has been busy, having just returned from working for the interests of the US on another continent. Further, reality, as usual, is not being kind to Progs' vision of the Portland stabber being an exemplar of a reich-wing Islamophobe. So this meme is augering in, though kpete may pick up on it in a day or two, after it's burned itself out.

Leftists are like video gamers who want keep hitting the reset button until they get the outcome they want.

Islamic terrorists commit countless atrocities, and we're supposed to not even mention the phrase "Islamic terrorism"; we're to shut our brains off, and chalk it up to extremism (without giving a second thought to what might be the source of that "extremism"). And no one is to be faulted for disregarding the threat.

A man kills two people and wounds another in a knife attack after uttering hate speech, and it's supposed to be indicative of a trend and Trump's fault.

A Mississippi deputy sheriff was among eight people shot and killed Saturday and a suspect in the murders was in custody, The Daily Leader reports.

The suspect, Willie Cory Godbolt, 35, confessed to the The Jackson Clarion-Ledger on video.

“I ain’t fit to live, not after what I done,” Godbolt told the paper Sunday after he was apprehended. “Not in y’all eyes, not in nobody else’s eyes.”

He said that he went to an address in Bogue Chitto to talk about his children. At some point neighbors called police, and that's when the deputy arrived.

"My pain wasn't designed for him. He was just there," Godbolt told the paper as he sat on the road, hands cuffed behind his back, waiting to be transported to jail. "We was talking about me trying to take the children  home... somebody called the officer.... that's what they do, they intervene. It cost him his life. I'm sorry."

The suspect also said he did not intend for police to capture him alive.

"My intentions was to have God kill me. I ran out of bullets," he said. "Suicide by cop was my intention."

He intended to kill people to make the cops kill him. Sounds like a typical terrorist.

I'm ok with it all being President Trump's "fault".  It means "Trump Backbone" is catching on.  The sick twisted political left in this country have been getting away with anything and everything for far too long.  It's damn time we break a few glasses (and maybe a few other things) in order to stress the point times have at last  changed and that their boorish incivility will be rewarded with forceful boorish incivility.
