UPDATE 5/17/17 8:30PM ET

Earlier this evening we suffered a script attack that vandalized some of our members' posts with a video message about a right-wing fringe conspiracy theory.

Our software detected the issue and automatically banned the accounts (and reset the passwords) of those members whose posts were vandalized. This is a safety precaution we built into our software to limit damage from attacks like this. We apologize for the inconvenience. Those accounts have all been reinstated.

The hacker did not gain access to any of your personal data. The hacker did not gain access to any of our website's administrative functions or data.

The vast majority of DU accounts were not affected. Most of you should be able to log back onto the site using the same password you had before. If our software does not accept your password then you will need to use our Lost Password function to get a temporary password assigned to you in order to log in.

At this point we do not know for certain how soon the site will be back up. We are hopeful that this downtime will be relatively short -- not nearly as long as last time.

We will be posting updates on this page, and on our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Thank you for your understanding.

Consider "likely" suspects:

* Conservatives like us'ns - we find DU highly entertaining, so we wouldn't hack DU;

* Trump & Trumplings - they see DU as making Libs & Progs look bat-guano insane, and wouldn't interfere with that;

* Russian hackers (if any of the sort DU hates actually exist) - DU advertises their successes (if any) and prowess (real or fantasy), so they wouldn't stop DU;

* The R Party - they see DU as making Libs & Progs look bat-guano insane, etc.;

* The D Party - they see DU as making Ds look bat-guano insane, an image the D would gladly shed;

* Clinton operatives - punishment for failure;

* Bernie operatives - revenge for supporting The CHILL and for driving out the Berniebots;

* Skinner & Co. - give the overheated DU-loons a brief time-out and divert DU-folks' attention outward to an external enemy (Can you say, "Reichstag Fire"? I Gotta obey Godwin's Law, :-) ).

IMO, the only parties with significant motives (other than boredom relief) to harass and shut down DU are Libs & Progs.
