The Conservatives have made the biggest gains by a governing party in a local election for more than 40 years.

With five weeks to go to the general election, they gained more than 500 seats and seized 11 extra councils.

Labour lost in Scotland?  Wow.  That's the real story there. Midlands may waffle back and forth, but Scotland and the north in general has been tightly-held Labour country since at least the '70s.  Remember all those strikes back during Thatcher's reign?  Remember how virtually nothing got built because the Communists pretty much never went to work in the '80s?  Notice where they were?  Liverpool and north.
