William Howard Taft was the first to do it, in 1910. Professional baseball predates that first by at least a couple of decades, I believe. In fact, of the first 5 Hall of Fame inductees, only Babe Ruth started his career after that first ceremonial First Pitch; Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson started their careers in the 19th Century (1900 is the last year of the 19th Century, not the first year of the 20th).
