Time to leave South Korea?

Since 2006, with the purchase of a Hyundai Elantra five-door, then a 2007 (new model) Santa Fe AWD, we've been Hyundai drivers. Both cars have been beyond excellent. Without equivocation I can say they've been the best cars I've ever owned.

The Santa Fe has been our primary long-haul vehicle, used for ski/snowboard trips to the mountains, many drives to Florida and the midwest, and has just shy of 200,000 miles to show for it. The older Elantra is awesome. This was from back in the day when Hyundai just stole old blueprints from other auto manufactures and copied them -- many people complimented me about my new Saab when I bought it. Now, it's obviously dated, and despite dings and dents from our kid using it to learn to drive, it's still going strong at 150k.

The point of this? We have two cars with 350k between them. They're both paid off. The Santa Fe still looks new; we took out the factory floor mats and installed custom liners, we've used seat covers, we've taken great care of it with a local mechanic we know and trust. One owner, all service records. The Elantra is just my fun car. A lovable beater with rear seats that fold down to haul lots of stuff.

Alas, we have to buy a new car. We're into our local mechanic beaucoup bucks right now as both cars had significant failures in the same week. Maintenance related on both (cat conv on the Elantra, timing chain cover on the Santa Fe, to be expected with the mileage).

I know this has already gone on too long, but I just thought I should give some background. We've really loved our Hyundais and they've been solid, loyal cars for a decade. But we need a new primary vehicle. Having BOTH cars fail in one week woke us up. We need a new primary vehicle. We'll keep both of the old cars...why not? They've been loyal as a hound dog, and we can use them for the dirty work. We'll get a nice comfy sedan for the primary vehicle. The question is...do we stick with Hyundai and all of the loyalty discounts we'll get, or should we switch? I'm seriously considering going Ford. I've never bought a Ford before, but they have some nice vehicles, and they're American-made. And they didn't take bail-out money.

I'd entertain other options, too. I love to try a Chevy Volt, but I'm skeered. Opinions, please.

Well, since the primitives are ignoring toll-dodger Atman's plea for advice, I thought I'd bring this over, to see if anyone over on this side's willing to counsel him.

The Volt has a gasoline back-up engine, for when the battery is too close to empty. It'd be horrible in hills, but could get people where they were going. Now, a Nissan Leaf is, IIRC, all electric. Should be perfect in showing how great electric-only is for longer drives.

Let me get this straight...  he thinks 175k miles is actually something to write about? That should only  be 1/3 the life-cycle of a modern passenger car if it's actually taken care properly.

Good towing capacity on it too. Up to 75 lbs I heard.

So it can tow . . . a spare battery?

Hyundai and sister company Kia make some pretty nice cars nowadays. I really like the Kia Optima but am satisfied with my truck (IT can pull a travel trailer).

H-5 for a great aphorism with a Dr.-Seuss-ian flair!

Actually, in case no one's aware of this, back when toll-dodging Atman and franksolich were young, he actually rented an artist's studio in Springfield, Massachusetts, across the street from where the author of the Dr. Seuss books once lived.

Since these same years I spent a couple of summers--actually about only six weeks each time, but that was long enough--with an ancient physician of Italianate derivation and his wife (although they usually went to Maine, leaving me in the house alone)--I always wondered if perhaps toll-dodger Atman's and franksolich's paths ever crossed, but unknowing to either of us.

The fact he said the Sante Fe needs a timing chain cover means he didn't REPLACE the timing chain at the required interval and it BROKE, trashing the cover.
Cats are a simple weld on job at any local muffler shop, less than $200 around here, including parts.

I have a 1978 Malibu I use for mail delivery and a daily driver.  My nephew asked me how many miles on it, I asked him which part?
Engine was purchased rebuilt.  I've put 65k on it.  (Original engine went 340,000 miles)
Transmission was purchased used, no idea as to total miles, I've put 115,000 on it.
Car was purchased on E-bay needing an engine.  Odometer said 127,000, I've put 115,000 more on it, for a total of 242,000.
The rear axle came out of my first car, which had the 340K motor.  Currently has 405,000 miles.

You're running either a 3.8 or some sort of sbc. Both known for their longevity. That t350 is a workhorse transmission too. All that adds up to nothing though if you can't change the stuff. That's the biggest benefit of your gbody, easy to work on. I ran an 86 cutlass supreme sedan for years. Even when the seals dried up and leaked all the oil out, it still got me home.

229 V-6 Chevy 3.8 (305 with 2 cylinders missing)  The transmission is actually a THM-200 with a TransGo shift kit (should be standard equipment for the 200), but I have a THM-350 standing by should this fellow give up (unless I decide to rebuild it, which I have done to 2 200's already, very simple tranny).

Just replaced the body mounts last week with polyurethane ones from Summit (BIG difference in the amount of chassis noise and feel), out of 12 mounts, 2 were missing, 6 were collapsed, and the other 4 were more or less in pieces.  Big surprise:  all but 1 of the bolts came out!  Next "big" purchase will be polyurethane suspension bushings, especially in the rear, with it's 4 link coil spring setup.

I also replaced the front spindles with the ones from my '80 Malibu when I put rotors on it last year.  They were longer, stronger, with larger bearings, and the rotors were $5 each CHEAPER!  LOL!
"Sherman" is my little "hot rod", I love tinkering with it!
