Did you catch the humanity there? The writer clearly identified with the sullen, frustrated Manning and said that he would do the same thing if he was in that position.

All of that is fine. I actually agree with the writers. Competitive athletes who fight through a long brutal season have every right to be frustrated when they lose. That's normal. Peyton Manning, in that sense, reacted, according to the writers of the day, like any great athlete would.

What's clear, though, is that Cam Newton got no such treatment.

Never mind the fact that after the game, in which Cam was sacked and mollywhopped all night long, he went and found Peyton Manning, flashed him a genuine smile, looked him in his eyes, shook his hand, and congratulated him. That didn't really get reported though did it?

Instead, Cam gets a treatment from pundits and retired players alike that is altogether different than what Peyton Manning received six years ago.

Bill Romanowski, former NFL linebacker and all-around doer of dumb things, had some thoughts on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s sullen and short-lived post-game media appearance after Super Bowl 50, and he took them to Twitter, where many denounced his since-deleted tweet as racist.

Newton appeared only briefly after the game to take questions from a throng of eager reporters, muttering only short answers before abruptly absconding from the press corps. Newton’s interview, or lack thereof, did not sit well with Romanowski.

“You will never last a minute in the NFL with that attitude,” Romanowski tweeted. “The world doesn’t revolve around you, boy!”

Newton’s brash style and flamboyant celebrations have made him a lightning rod for criticism throughout the Panthers’ franchise-best 15-1 regular season. Many have said the harsh words aimed at Newton have been motivated, at least in part, by his race, an issue Newton addressed in the run-up to the Super Bowl.

Is it now racial to expect an athlete of any color to act professional and display good sportsmanship?

We were taught these things starting in little league and pee wee football about how to act when we win or lose. Black kids and white kids are taught the same lessons. It's about being respectful of the game, the opponent, and the competitive spirit.

Even the NY daily is inserting race when race isn't relevent. I see stirring the racial pot and trying to pit black vs white is becoming a thing in the media. This doesn't bode well for race relations in the future.

As for Cam, he'll get over it.

Have you watched Cam Newton this year? He was fearless. He scored how many rushing touchdowns? And I saw several of him diving over the goal line, and getting hit in the process.

Yet, late in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl, with the game in the balance, and the ball RIGHT in front of him, he doesn't dive on it.... why? I'll tell you why. He was spooked. Scared. He had gotten hit the entire game, and he was afraid of being hit again. Denver got to him. Superman had his cape stolen.

That aside, Vonn and Dware and the rest of the Denver defense were living rent free in Newtons head before the first Carolina possession was even over. All season people had remarked that Denvers defense was superbowl caliber. Newton appears not to have done his homework on them, or he did it poorly. That leads to losing in the NFL no matter what color you are or what team you play for.

Here is my take.

Newton is one helluva athlete and quarterback. All his life he's played for that moment. He lost the biggest game he's ever played in.

Was he disappointed? You betcha.
Was he upset? You betcha.

The year he had makes me wish I'd have taken him in fantasy football, but, no one can foresee what kind of season anyone would have.

That said. He should have taken some time to collect himself, yell in the locker room, kick the bench, do what he needed to do to get the steam out, THEN go talk to the press. The press would have waited. Collect himself and just say "On this day, Denver was better. they had me bottled up and i give them all the credit in the world". (or something to that effect).

It was wrong of him to just walk out. He owed HIS FANS an explanation at that press conference. You know, the ones who supported him all season.

And by the way, he happens to be an NFL quarterback who is black, NOT a black quarterback. In my mind, there's a big difference.

I don't see color in anyone. They're either a nice person worthy of respect, or they aren't, period.

As a Broncos fan, I have watched how Peyton handles a tough loss. He is a gracious in defeat as he is in victory. He's a sportsman. Cam was bitter and could not handle defeat because everyone to include sports media pundits filled his head with ideas of how great he is.

Re Bill Romanowski's Tweet, it was injudicious, and he has apologized. Romanowski has 4 Superbowl rings - 2 with SF, 2 with Denver - in a 15 year NFL career. He's walked his talk. To the non-hypersensitive, Romanowski was obviously referring to Newton's comparative inexperience emphasize his point, that star players who don't respect the sports media and their fans don't remain stars for very long. IOW, "boy" referred to Newton's immaturity - age and behavior - not his race.

I don't recall Peyton Manning pouting like a child in the press conference...muttering a few one syllable answers and then storming out when they lost to New Orleans.

Big difference between that and not shaking hands on the field.

Cam Newton, as the starting QB is a leader of that team whether he like it or not.  And as such...leaders have to act and carry themselves differently than your normal players.

Cam didn't act like a team leader or the NFL MVP.

He acted like some kid that just lost a Pop Warner game.
