12. The furnace is till functioning- probably for their hot water? And they are afraid to touch it...
so we are just trying to troubleshoot the stupid thermostat.
The thermostat is not stupid, it's DUmb. And so are you Betty Ellen.

5. remove the thermostat from the wall (see "armchair programming")
clean the battery contacts and reinstall batteries
if still getting "BATT" display
verify that the new batteries are good
if still bad
replace thermostat. Do you have an old manual one in a junk drawer?
Wrong Jeff, the correct response is "Betty Ellen, you need to get a emergency call into the local union repair shop "STAT" to get the heat turned on. The tenants deserve heat not a step by step troubleshooting guide from you DUmmy.

10. Nope, and unfortunately, I am 35 miles away, and not too handy. On a fair day it is all
but impossible to get a skilled person out there on a Sunday- and they have more than 20" of snow, and a subway shut down. Hoping some stores are open in the AM.
Am suggesting they check the battery contacts.
You need to get a union taxi driver to the tenants and relocate them and their 5 dogs and three cats and parrot to a place that has heat now. Right now. Or should we call you Betty Ellen Trump?

13. try cycling the power at the main breaker too
I second this advice.
Try getting a taxi to the home before I call the rent control board. And the rabies clinic. And News 4 New York.
