RICO for climate deniers

*At the rate things are going, these wicked old men might be glad to be in a nice safe white-collar prison instead of a climate-crisis refugee camp.

The following is the text of a letter written by a number of scientists asking for a federal investigation of climate science denial under the RICO statute.

Letter to President Obama, Attorney General Lynch, and OSTP Director Holdren

September 1, 2015

Dear President Obama, Attorney General Lynch, and OSTP Director Holdren,

As you know, an overwhelming majority of climate scientists are convinced about the potentially serious adverse effects of human-induced climate change on human health, agriculture, and biodiversity. We applaud your efforts to regulate emissions and the other steps you are taking. Nonetheless, as climate scientists we are exceedingly concerned that America’s response to climate change – indeed, the world’s response to climate change – is insufficient. The risks posed by climate change, including increasing extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and increasing ocean acidity – and potential strategies for addressing them – are detailed in the Third National Climate Assessment (2014), Climate Change Impacts in the United States. The stability of the Earth’s climate over the past ten thousand years contributed to the growth of agriculture and therefore, a thriving human civilization. We are now at high risk of seriously destabilizing the Earth’s climate and irreparably harming people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people.

We appreciate that you are making aggressive and imaginative use of the limited tools available to you in the face of a recalcitrant Congress. One additional tool – recently proposed by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse – is a RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) investigation of corporations and other organizations that have knowingly deceived the American people about the risks of climate change, as a means to forestall America’s response to climate change............................

The methods of these organizations are quite similar to those used earlier by the tobacco industry. A RICO investigation (1999 to 2006) played an important role in stopping the tobacco industry from continuing to deceive the American people about the dangers of smoking. If corporations in the fossil fuel industry and their supporters are guilty of the misdeeds that have been documented in books and journal articles, it is imperative that these misdeeds be stopped as soon as possible so that America and the world can get on with the critically important business of finding effective ways to restabilize the Earth’s climate, before even more lasting damage is done.

Sincerely,.........

Can`t win by vote then throw them in jail.
What has been a trademark of the left for a century.

If it were actually 'Settled science,' there wouldn't be twenty competing models of it.  Right or not, there is ONE Standard Model in quantum mechanics, ONE set of Newtonian Laws of Motion, ONE set of the Laws of Thermodynamics, and ONE model for gravitational attraction in astrophysics.  And as far as that 'Settled science' stuff goes, both phlogiston and the Ptolemaic model of the universe were once accepted science.

Dear DUchebags,

AGW is a cult. It is not science. Science produces theories that can be confirmed. AGW has not had one theory that has been confirmed by reality. NOT ONE. Furthermore, science produces theories that can be used regressively. That can be proven by going back to show how a system got to the point where it is now. AGW can't do that either.

When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

If they really want to "settle" the science, they'd agree to a public debate with learned scientists who don't believe it's happening. Each side can present their proof. If global warming climate change is real, it will be evident to everyone and the physicists, climatologists, astrophysicists, meteorologists, etc. who are deniers will have to skulk away in embarrassment. Who wouldn't believe the "settled science" biology majors were they to best someone like Freeman Dyson, who's such a freaking genius he calculated the number of atoms in the sun at 5 years old. Imagine all the people they could convince to use one sheet of toilet paper and never use a wood stove or air conditioner again?

They could finally refute this: That Scientific Global Warming Consensus...Not!

Quote
So where did that famous “consensus” claim that “98% of all scientists believe in global warming” come from? It originated from an endlessly reported 2009 American Geophysical Union (AGU) survey consisting of an intentionally brief two-minute, two question online survey sent to 10,257 earth scientists (emphasis mine) by two researchers at the University of Illinois...only a small subset, just 77 who had been successful in getting more than half of their papers recently accepted by peer-reviewed climate science journals, were considered in their survey statistic. That “98% all scientists” referred to a laughably puny number of 75 of those 77 who answered “yes”.

Until they're willing to stand behind their "facts" with credentialed, highly intelligent scientist who can offer their own evidence against global-whatever-the-hell-they're-calling-it-now-hoping-it-will-be-more-believable, they cannot claim their science is settled. Even NASA's own data prooves the planet is cooling, despite their efforts to manipulate and hide it. I get the left, Hollywood, Athiests looking for a religion, the Catholic Church (they've always been slow to accept scientific change, just ask Galileo & Copernicus), politicians with a god complex and useful idiots who forgot the lesson taught in Chicken Little, but scientists who SEE and understand concrete proof that proves they're wrong...I don't get that. Why would you want your credibility challenged? When history books are written about this era people will marvel at how gullible and rigid scientists were. What happened to skepticism. If Einstein were alive today, they'd throw him under the bus.

A little background of the lead author of that piece of comedy is in order.

Quote
UN IPCC lead author Kevin Trenberth a moustacheoed alarmist and IPCC lead author who works at the Climate Analysis Section at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research. Trenberth is best known for two things.

The first was his frustrated 2009 email, exposed during Climategate:

The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.

(Hence his nickname Kevin ‘Travesty’ Trenberth. The real travesty of that email, of course, is that what he’s shown clearly doing there is not science but politics. A scientist would see the “missing heat” issue not as a “travesty” but as an opportunity to reassess the now-falsified models in the light of new evidence.)

And the second is the infamous occasion on which he caused one of his IPCC authors to resign in protest at the way he (Trenberth) had misrepresented his research on hurricanes.

The author’s name was Chris Landsea, Science Officer at the National Hurricane Center. As one of the US’s leading hurricane experts, he had been invited to contribute to the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report.

Landsea made it quite clear in his contribution that the spate of recent hurricane activity – this was in 2005 – had nothing to do with global warming. However, he was appalled to discover that when Trenberth (who is not an expert on hurricanes) gave a conference at Harvard to announce his findings he claimed the opposite.

Another author of that letter is Jagadish Shukla...and in typical Liberal fashion he's politicking at tax payer expense.

Quote
For his expertise, Shukla is amply rewarded by George Mason University with a salary over $250,000 a year.

Apparently, though, this isn’t a full time job. It can’t be – because on top of this salary, from 2012 to 2014, Shukla appears to have paid himself and his wife $1.5 million from government climate grants for his part-time work via his non-profit Institute of Global Environment and Society (IGES).

IGES is an organization which gets almost all its income from US taxpayers – last year a whopping $3.8 million – via institutions including the National Science Foundation, NOAA and NASA. The organization’s declared aim is to “improve understanding and prediction of the variations of the Earth’s climate through scientific research on climate variability and climate predictability, and to share both the fruits of this research and the tools necessary to carry out this research with society as a whole.”

A tough job, clearly, but someone’s got to do it. Which is why Shukla generously rewards its president – himself – with a salary of $330,000 for a 28 hour week and his wife (who works full time) another $166,000.

Perhaps this is all perfectly above board and legal.

But there are a couple of details that appear rather puzzling.

IGES is, according to the Maryland department of Assessments and Taxation where it is registered, supposed to be organized exclusively for charitable, religious, educational and scientific purposes. (Hence its non-profit status).

So why, exactly was the letter to Obama sent from the IGES? Does its tax status not exclude it from such naked politicking?

Also, is it not the case that under Virginia law (Shukla teaches at George Mason University, remember) you cannot be employed elsewhere to do the same job? So perhaps he can explain how his work as professor of climate dynamics at GMU differs so markedly from his “scientific research on climate variability and climate predictability” at IGES that it entitles him to claim separate federal grant funding for the latter. If he can’t, then GMU might want him to ask him for its share of that $3.8 million in federal grants mentioned above. The university would be entitled to 50 per cent.

13. I have been hoping for a long time that RICO would be used against anti-abortion groups.

I would guess there is at least some coordination between Operation Rescue, some churches, the Republican Party, James O'Keefe's group, Lila Rose, the Center For Medical Progress (I think that's the name of the fake fetal-parts procurement company), perhaps ALEC (not sure if they are creating templates for anti-abortion laws), and others. There was the suggestion here a while ago that some Republicans in Congress had knowledge pror to its public release of the doctored video we're all talking about.

Why couldn't a RICO case be brought over a coordinated effort to deny American women access to a legal medical procedure?
