NEW YORK (CBS) ― Phil Gramm, a top adviser to presidential candidate John McCain, is resigning from the role as campaign co-chairman after his comments that the United States had become a "nation of whiners" who constantly complain about the state of the economy.

The former U.S. senator from Texas and past presidential candidate made the remarks earlier this month. McCain immediately distanced himself from the comments, but they have been criticized constantly as McCain tries to show he can help steer the country past its current financial troubles.

Gramm had also suggested that the country was facing a "mental recession" instead of real economic problems. Gramm said in a statement late Friday that he is stepping down as a co-chair of the campaign to "end this distraction."

This is bullshit.  I'm getting damn sick and tired of this PC crap about 'sensitivity'.  FWIW, I think Ferarro should have stuck by her comments and stayed with the Clinton campaign.  The more you let these uber-sensitive shitheads with no common f%&^ng sense push you around, the more power you give them.  Somebody needs to kneecap a few of these crybabies and tell them to grow up.

Gramm didn't quit.  He was thrown under the bus for the unpardonable sin of voicing a conservative thought while associated with the presidential campaign of a Democrat wannabe.

I wonder if McCain understands that any votes from the conservative base will be reluctantly cast.

All this proves is that he's a politician. Unfortunately, they all do it. I'd love for someone on our side to stand up and tell the world what they really think - like it or lump it. I thought Fred Thompson embodied that principle. Look where he is. He didn't want to preen and prance and it cost him.

From what I have read, Gramm is the one that was mainly responsible for digging up McCain from his grave and breathing new life into his campaign. This really pisses me off because they were supposed to be such close friends. Gramm and Newt are about the only 2 conservatives that I know of, that are for downsizing government.

He isn't getting any of my money in the form of campaign contributions. I get a daily letter from him and I am going to start sending them back with a note that he will get my vote, but he has not earned my support.

I get e-mail damned near daily both from him and from the congressional campaign committee, sqwawking about the latest "outrage" from the Democrats and begging me to send them more money to counter the Democrat propaganda.  I have a canned reply I always send back: when the Republicans stop looking, sounding and acting like Democrats, then I MIGHT go back to giving a shit, but not before.

I am sure I will find myself so spun up and stressed out about the election that my head will explode and I will donate.  and probably buy his gear from his website;  golf shirts and sweatshirts and hats and stuff.  I have a closet full of campaign apparel going back to bush 41.  I wore a sweatshirt that said "BUSH/CHENEY 2004" in red white and blue letters about 8 inches high to an anti-war rally at the college of charleston a few years ago.  they were horrified.  that alone made it worth it. :-)
