With the Redskins trademark deal in the news I just knew the DUmmies would be talking about it. I also could tell which side most DUmmies would occupy without using my fictional spirit-guide powers.
Now let’s look at the reason the patent office claimed the trademarks for the name had to be canceled: the nickname is disparaging of Native Americans.
The word ‘disparage’ means to regard or represent as being of little worth.
I can imagine the conversation back in the 30s when Marshall decided to change the name of the team…
Marshall: We need a new nickname for the team.
Assistant: How about The Lumberjacks?
Marshall: No. Lumberjacks are generally viewed as rugged individuals.
Assistant: How about The Warbirds?
Marshall: No. I don’t know what a warbird is but it sounds like something that would fight to win.
Assistant: Well, how about The Stallions?
Marshall: No. Stallions are fast, feisty creatures. You’ve got to understand that the members of this team will be referring to themselves by this name. We can’t have a name that suggests that they are rugged, would fight to win, or are fast and feisty. We need a name that says they are beneath everyone else. We need a name that reflects this team and each individual player as being of little worth!
Assistant: The Polesmokers? The Deadbeats? Or something like that?
Marshall: No! Worse than that! We want a name that will denigrate you, me, and every single member of this organization!
Assistant: Hmmm. Who was that guy that back in the 1800s who got beat so badly by the redskins?
Marshall: Eureka! That’s the name! The Redskins!

Yes, I realize that above conversation is complete and utter bullshit. Any normal person knows that a professional sports team generally wants their name to reflect some sort of strength. That’s why there is the New England Patriots instead of the New England Liberals. The San Francisco 49ers instead of the San Francisco RumpRangers. The Dallas Cowboys instead of the Dallas Progressives.
Whether you’re an American Indian, an Indian Indian or a Warren pretend Indian, if you’ve got the time to worry about the nickname that a sports team goes by you’ve got way to much time on your hands.
