CBS has named Stephen Colbert as new host of the “Late Show,” effective when David Letterman retires.

Here is the press release:

The CBS Television Network today announced that Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning “The Colbert Report,” will succeed David Letterman as the host of THE LATE SHOW, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast. The five-year agreement between CBS and Colbert was announced by Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation, and Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment.

Letterman, the legendary, critically acclaimed host of the CBS late night series for 21 years, announced his retirement on his April 3 broadcast. Colbert's premiere date as host of THE LATE SHOW will be announced after Mr. Lettermen determines a timetable for his final broadcasts in 2015.

Specific creative elements, as well as the producers and the location for the Colbert-hosted LATE SHOW, will be determined and announced at a later date.

His ratings will probably not translate to a big network. Cable humor rarely does.

When Bill Maher was on Comedy Central, his show wasn't too bad and he was more of a moderator between two liberals and two conservatives. He went to ABC and his show went to shit.

Meh.

I tossed the boob tube out on it's ass 5 1/2 years ago, and I haven't seen anything coming down the sewer pipe since that would make me change my mind.  This also fails that standard.

A show I never watched and still won't.
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

I very seldom stay up that late. If I did, I wouldn't watch him......Bring back a Steve Allen or a Jack Parr and I might make an effort to watch late night TV.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Hm.  I don't watch that show and won't with Colbert.  I'm not too sure I see this ending well.  He's known for a certain schtick on his own show, I don't know how that will translate.  I don't see him connecting with a broader audience.

I even saw many similar comments at the DUmp, that his comedy won't translate to CBS and that time slot.  I rarely watch those shows anymore, perhaps it is a case of getting older, but who knows.
