FL:Reform of Stand Your Ground Law Passes House
« on: March 23, 2014, 08:27:01 PM »
And here the thought was that Trayvon's parents along with the LWNJ's, Sharpton's and Jackson's were gonna get the law thrown out? :cheersmate:

Quote
HB 89, a reform of the "Stand Your Ground" law, passed the Florida House on 20 March with a vote of 93-24. The law extends the same immunity given to people who actually shoot someone in self defense to those who only threaten force or fire warning shots in self defense.

The bill was given impetus by the Marissa Alexander case where the defendant claimed to have fired a warning shot, but was sentenced to 20 years in prison under Florida's mandatory sentencing laws.

The bill has brought together a coalition of diverse supporters, including the Florida Public Defender Association and the NRA.

“We see, routinely, clients that we believe shouldn’t be prosecuted because they did act in lawful self-defense,” said Stacy Scott, the Gainesville-based public defender for the 8th Judicial Circuit. “We’re fighting those cases in court every day

The reform bill also provides for the expungement of records in self defense cases. From bradenton.com, Representative Matt Gaetz:
“The point is to make sure that someone who appropriately uses the ‘stand your ground’ defense doesn’t have their life ruined by the use of that defense,” Gaetz said.

Add it to all the genius remarks owebuma has uttered.

There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

I'm opposed to TR's politics, but the man had balls. I'd gladly sit down with him over whisky and cigars and disagree vigorously about many, many things- with a smile on my face the whole time.

So.... "Bully!"

No shit, huh?  What a conversation that would be.

The case of Marissa Alexander that this is based on was not a case of "Stand your ground".  She left the house during an argument, went to her car , got a gun and returned to face her husband.

ETA:  This law should make the left happy, they were the ones complaining that hers sentence was an injustice.

Old Teddy would never be able to sway me from my commitment to the sovereignty of the individual, personal liberty, personal responsibility, and Austrian school economics. I would likely not sway him from nascent progressivism and fascism.

But arguing with TR, particularly over bourbon and cigars, would be infinitely more pleasant than whacking the DUmpmonkeys who escape Skin's Island and infest the real world. I wouldn't piss on a DUmpmonkey if it was on fire.

I agree completely.  What an experience that would be - an honest dicussion of two opposing views, in a gentlemanly fashion, with an actual intellectual who genuinely loved his country.
