brooklynite (15,458 posts) Edwin Edwards will announce run for Congress on Monday, sources saySource: Times-PicayuneFormer Gov. Edwin Edwards is known for his brazen, often shocking quotes. But the announcement slated to issue forth from Edwards' lips Monday (March 17) at the Press Club of Baton Rouge might be one of his most surprising yet. The four-term governor and former federal inmate is running for Congress, according to multiple sources close to Edwards. He will run in Louisiana's strongly Republican 6th District, which snakes its way from north Baton Rouge through Ascension and all the way down to the Houma-Thibodaux area. The field is already bloated, but doesn't yet feature a strong Democratic candidate. Edwards' announcement will come Monday during the weekly meeting of the capital area press club. He won't confirm his intentions beforehand, but capital followers say it's a fait accompli -- he's already been polling and has even booked on several local TV and radio stations for their Tuesday morning broadcasts. But while some might say his candidacy is a throw away stunt, aimed at keeping the 86-year-old in the spotlight, others think the Marksville native known as the Silver Fox is trying to redeem himself politically with a graft-free performance in what would be his fifth term in Congress.Read more: http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2014/03/edwin_edwards_congress_louisia.html Remember..."Vote for the Crook -- it's important"

Cheviteau (67 posts) 7. That may be your take.EE was a very good governor for this state. He has never been accused, nor has it ever been insinuated, that he has ever taken a cent of taxpayer's money except for the salaries he worked for as an elected official. He is the kind of 'governor' that progressives in other states can only wish for. The casino owners and high-rollers took down a very good Alabama governor through legal federal corruption. The same can be said of Edwin Edwards. When you call this man a crook, you don't know what you're talking about.
Edwards was the dominant figure in Louisiana politics for much of the late 20th century despite a series of scandals that resulted in numerous investigations and four federal trials, one of which resulted in a conviction in 2000. That case arose from the licensing of riverboat casinos during his final term. He spent eight years in prison for the fraud and racketeering case. Before and after his prison term, he defended himself as a victim of an unfair federal judge in Baton Rouge, perjured testimony by former friends who had sought casino licenses and an overzealous federal government. Federal prosecutors have denied all of those accusations.
azureblue (594 posts) 8. I'll second thatI was in La. when he was governor, and, bottom line, he always did right by the state. Odd that he got the shaft and AL and MS got ignored for far worse. Oh yeah, what party does EE belong to?
cbayer (129,323 posts) 3. I didn't know he was out of prison already. He has got to be one of the most narcissistic individuals in the world.
azureblue (594 posts) 9. what BSyou ignore Vitter, Issa, Cruz, Rubio, King, Trump, Bush, etc. Why? Please explain your (lack of) reasoning. You're just here to smear.
cbayer (129,323 posts) 10. Excuse me? I'm sorry. Didn't realize that this was an Edwards support thread.
steve2470 (18,975 posts) 4. somehow I thought he was dead nt
azureblue (594 posts) 6. no, buta lot of people rose from the dead and voted for him, the last time he ran for office. Some liked him so much they voted twice. And they may rise again..
azureblue (594 posts) 5. Edwards has always been honest about itHe has nothing to hide and has no pretensions about it, unlike Vitter, Cruz, Issa, ad nauseum, who think they are oh so holy. He is an honest crook, and I'd take an honest crook over someone like Vitter, Issa, etc., any day. You knwo what you're getting and you know he won't hide it or get all sanctimonious at you. If he gets elected, I can hear the GOP howling. And I can hear his, too - he will be calling them down for their dishonesty in a very uncomfortable way..... One thing about EE - he was never shy about calling it as he sees it and I doubt he will change that. He will be the the bull in a GOP china shop - the GOP does not know how to deal with a true LA politician - them Cajun boys play rough.
EC (12,154 posts) 11. From what I understandhe did a good job when he was in the House before. It wasn't until he hit Governor that he started getting himself into trouble. So why not? I think he could win.
Edwards married well.In case of boat capsize, breasts may be used as Personal Flotation Devices.
