I participated on a jury once and found no cause to censor my fellow DU poster, finding the complainants position to be petty and without merit. Unfortunately, I have seen one example after another of DU members unfairly being censored because people in our community are so thin skinned and easily offended that even the slightest hint of an insult or intolerance can be grounds for pressing the famous censorship (alert abuse) button.
 
One example I can mention is a thread dealing with Texas donors not attending a Christie fundraiser. A member of DU made an amusing popular culture reference to Texas by citing Full Metal Jacket and posting "Only two things come from Texas" and members of this community censored that individual for that. So not only was one member of our community petty enough to flag it for abuse, but a majority of a jury agreed to endorse that pettiness.
 
Another example involves the jury I participated in where a member of DU tried to use the "alert abuse" button because another member said something along the lines of "I wouldn't trust you if you told me the sky was blue. I would have to check for myself first." The complainant decided that he had been called a liar and that was a violation of DU policy. In that case, common sense shockingly prevailed but that seems to be the exception and not the rule.
 
You can preach democracy, tolerance, and freedom all you want but all of these things require a balance between each other. Sadly, I think DU needs to find a far better formula because people are being censored here for the most petty of things. In fact, I will not be surprised if my account loses its posting privileges for this post. And in that case I will be happy to part ways with such a reactionary and petty community.

I kept finding myself in the minority with petty bullshit. I decided to quit enabling whiners.

16. Eh... You've only been on one jury.

It's hard to extrapolate the "DU experience" from one jury duty.

It is what it is... Keep the discussion civil and you will be all set. And I personally don't consider it censorship because I can always just click "show me the post".
