Folk singer Pete Seeger dies at age 94
« on: January 28, 2014, 01:56:11 AM »
Quote
To Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, the singer/songwriter/activist who died Monday at the age of 94 was "the father of American folk music."

But Seeger, who popularized This Land Is Your Land and We Shall Overcome and wrote If I Had a Hammer and Turn, Turn, Turn, never liked the term folk music.

"It's been defined as the 'music of the peasants,'" Seeger told USA TODAY in a 2009 interview, "and then you get someone saying (of Seeger), 'he's no peasant!'''

Seeger, who dropped out of Harvard University in 1938 to ride a bicycle across the country, quoted his father, Charles Seeger, a musicologist: "My dad, the old professor, used to say, 'Never get into an argument about what's folk music and what isn't.'" ... link

I went by his property in October.  It's near the city of Beacon in NYS.  Up a dirt road, accessable (ideally) in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle.  The guy I was with at the time (head of the Beacon Municipal Water Company) told me that he would still be seen working on the property from time to time, and that it was possible to see him.  He wasn't out that day.

Looked him up.  "Seeger has also been an engaged activist, supporting such causes as international disarmament, civil rights and environmental awareness." according to http://www.biography.com/people/pete-seeger-9542618

In the middle of this video he finally admits that he was a member of the communist party. For many years he either wouldn't answer the question or denied that he was a member. His dad was also a communist....like father, like son.

A card carrying member.  The "This Land is Your Land" guy.

I read somewhere (might have been here) that "This Land is Your Land" was a communist diddy.  I was shocked that a song we had repeatedly sung at school growing up was commie tripe.

This. He was very good at trying to hide/deny it. As far as I'm concerned he was a P.O S.
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

Why would anyone who is making a good, easy living off the capitalist system want to bring about a communist system?

It was written in 1940 by Woody Guthrie, who was tired of hearing Kate Smith's "God Bless America" on the radio.  It was originally titled "God Blessed America."
