After high school, in the midst of World War II, Johnson joined the United States Army Air Forces as an aviation cadet and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He flew 44 combat missions as a bombardier in B-25 bombers. While flying as a navigator in a B-25 with the 100th Bombardment Squadron, 42nd Bombardment Group, 13th Air Force, his plane and two other B-25s were shot down in the Philippines in March 1945 during a low level bombing and strafing run against Japanese targets. The planes were hit by intense flak and had to ditch in the waters off the port of Zamboanga. During the ditching, he broke both his ankles and the radioman next to him was killed. Johnson earned a Purple Heart for this mission. He was also awarded the Air Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three service stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one service star, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of first lieutenant on November 22, 1945. He then joined the Army Reserve and used the GI Bill to fund his acting studies at the Actors Lab in Hollywood. At acting school he met actress Kay Levey, and they married on July 23, 1949.

Damn.

:taps:

I am speechless.  I had no idea he was a decorated war hero.

He did I think 2 great Twilight Zone episodes but like most of the rest of the cast it ended his career until he was no longer The Professor first and foremost.   I think I read Dawn Wells was the only one smart enough to demand residuals.

RIP War Hero and endearing American Icon.

Dave Madden, 'The Partridge Family's' Reuben Kincaid, Dies at 82

Dave Madden, best known as the sad-sack band manager in the 1970s TV show "The Partridge Family," died today at the age of 82, Yahoo has confirmed. The actor's former agent told TMZ that Madden died of "congestive heart and kidney failure" in Florida.

Madden played the character of Reuben Kincaid on the show about a family of musicians, who travel around in an old school bus to perform.

He often was vexed by the antics of the Partridge kids, led by David Cassidy and Danny Bonaduce.

"I'm saddened by the loss of such a sweet man," Cassidy told Yahoo in a statement from his rep. "He was supportive and kind on the set and off and he will be missed by many."

Bonaduce told Yahoo via phone that Madden "was as close to me as any member of my family. I don't think I'll be able to get into the Magic Castle now without him. If he had a choice, he would probably want to be remembered as a really good magician… that was his thing."

I liked what he said in a speech at MIT.

Here is what he said:

"Russell: I was at a speaking engagement for MIT and I said the Professor has all sorts of degrees, including one from this very institution! And that's why I can make a radio out of a coconut, and not fix a hole in a boat!"    :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

LOL.   That sounds like some Car Talk material (both Magliozzi brothers have degrees from MIT).

LOL!!! I never heard them on the radio... the local rag here used to have an article from them about once a week. I always thought they were funny. I think I read somewhere that they are no longer on the radio. Seems to me like they were on NPR?

They've been on NPR since the 1980s.  Tom is in his 70s and decided to retire so they've been playing reruns for the last year.  Airtime is 10am EST Saturday and 6pm Sunday.

I have to wonder, their website says they're still producing shows,

I'll have to check it out now that football is winding down. 10am on Saturday is considered morning in the perky house and my ass is busy studying the inside of my eyelids. 6pm on Sunday sounds pretty good. I'm usually fixing dinner and I can turn on the radio in the kitchen.
